During that time he, ; brought his journal to the very front rank of the organs of public opinion in the United States. From the start it espoused the doctrines of the [ Jeffeisonian State.s Rights party. Thomas Jefitx- son, VV’^illiam B Gibs, James Madison, Peter Daniel and others, were constant contributors to its ctilumns. In 1845, .Mr. Ritchie moved to VV’ashingtoti to take charge of the Democwtic or gan, the Union, and died in that city a tew years afterwards. He was suoceeded in the proprietor ship of the Entjuirer by his sons, VV’illiam F. and Thomas Ritchie. Thomas Ritchie, Jr., was con cerned in the unfortunate afiair wliich ended in the death of .Nlr. Pleasants, the editor ot ihe Rich mond VV’hig. 'The paper was conducted by W’ii- liam F. Ritchie until 1?5S, when he associated with him Col. Nat. 'J'yler, a distant relative*ot the FjX-Presid«nt, atrti O. Jennings Wise, .son of the Ex-Governor, lie retired iu l^tiO, and in 18G1 Mr. VV. B. Allegre became one of the pro prietors. The firm is now Tyler, Wise& Allegre. Both Col’. Tyler and Capt. Wise are now absent in the milittiry service of the countiy. Mr. Alle gro is the business manager, a: d inherits from his tather, a veteran publisher of a half century, all the integrity, industry and intelligence which should characterize the successful ncw.sjiaper pro prietor. Roger A. Pryor wa.s jt.ssoeiafed with the paper, as its editor, for two year.s, and carried it through the famous Know Nothing campaign. At the commencement of the present war, Mr, fl. .VI DeVV’itt became the editor. He was succeeded not long since by ,V]r. Richard .M. Smith, who was until the occupation of .Alexandria by the enemy, the editor of the Sentinel, published at that place. He is a gentleman of ability and wields a vigorous pen. I'he F.Inquirer haa a large circulation and still maintains its influence with the A'irginia people. The W’hig, so long the party opponent of the Enquirer, and several times itjs deadly antago nist, was commenced in 1824 by John Hampden IMeasants, who continued his connection W'ith the paper, with perhaps brief intervals, through the rest ot his life, until he was killed in the duel with the editor of the Enquirer in 184ti. Mr. Pleasants possessed great talents and almost un bounded influence with his party. He was as sisted, during his editorial career, bj several ex- * cellent writers. Among these were Alexander Moseley, Richard H. Toler, Edward VA’iliiani Johnston, (a brother ot Gen. .Jos. .Johnston,^ Robt. Ridgeway, Hugh l’lea.sants, and other.s. Mr. Moseley is now one of the proprietors. Other shares in the paper are owned by VV’yatt M. El liott and J. C. Shields. The active editor of the VV’hig is Mr. James McDonald, assisted freqtfcntly *by Mr. Moseley, anJ also by Mr. John Gneme— all of them graceful and puugent writers. The VV’hig opposed Secession with much vigor, until the Lincoln call for 75.000 men, when it went over, in one night, to the Southern side, aud ha^ perhap.s been unrivalled in the bitterness and per- • tinaoity ot its partizauship tor - the causg ever since, 'ihc publishers showed their belief in works as well as words. Two of them. Major Shields and Captain Elliott, have been in service ever since the war commenced, and have proved themselves to be gallant and useful officers. The Examiner was started in 1847, by B. M. DeVV’itt and (J. A. Wright, the latter, howt^yer, remaining in the paper but a phort time. .Mr. DeVV’itt IS probably the oldest new.spaper editor in Virginia, Besides the Exaaiiuer he has been connected at different times with the Montgome ry (.Ala.) Advertiser, Richmond Entjuirer, Rich mond index and other papers. Shortly after the Examiner was commenced, Mr. John M. Daniel, a brilliant and erratic young V irginkin, bought a •hare, and in the course ot a few years became the sole proprietor. He was aj»p;jinted' Charge d’Ati'aircs to Sardinia in 1853, and remained abroad in that cjipacity uutil 1801. During his absence the paper was edited by" Mr. DeW'itt, R. W’. Hughes, William Old and others.. It was well known as the organ of the Hunter faction ot the Democracy; the En({uirer, at the same time, acting as the organ of the triends of (Jov. AV’ise. Upon Mr. Daniel’s return, he assumed an active part in the management of the paper. He was an earnest advo ate of Sece.^^sion.
