No matter how the physi cians may talk, women always have compressed their waists, and they always will until publio opinion pro nounces for the heavy figure. ' It never influenced a woman yet to hear that Venus de Medici hai a large waist she has been ..told, so ever since that faultless image of female beauty was disinterred. She merely' shrugs her shoulders and draws her laces tighter. She knows tHaC if she went to a ball with that figure of the Venus no man would ask her to dance. So important a matter is it to have a small waist, that it has be come a matter of pride to tlie Aus trian people, and is ofteu mentioned in the court journals that the em press of Austria is celebrated for possessing a waist which: only meaa-. ures sixteen inches. There 4 ara many persons who have rs small a waist, but they have not the height and contour, aud becoming fulluess which the Empres has.- Nor is the "small waist furore" alone conflued to the .women of civ-, ilized lands, iso called. The small foot of the Ciinese woman is a local peculiarity; the small waisr, or-tbe. striving fov it, is universal. Eva grave Hurmoldt describes the beau ties of Java as eating a sort of clay called ampo, by which they become very much reduced in size. It kills them finally, but what of that? Who makes fashions? aud Why does it last? Why does it change? Caricature and contempt fall upomit like suubeams on a stone wall, when lol we wake in the morning and fihd that fashion is changed! no one , r known how or wherefore. time that dresses were short waisted: corsejtless, and oiaUj, and fbr-about ten years-corsets were unknown. The results were disastrous. spifial diseases became very frequent, and stooping figures and uneven shoulders pre vailed. Tlie ntter sudden disuse of the corset was thought to ha e a bad effect on liealth, consequently the corset was resumed, and probably will always be worn. Physicians agree, however, that the corset of the present day is highly injurious to the health; the extreme tightening of-the- stay conducing grejitly to consumption and hip dis easf. A refcTrm in thia reupect is im probable, till loose garments are 'lift fashion." The Monroe (La.) Telegraph say -s: William Deinpsey, a native of Ire land, aged about 28 years, who has been recently employed in repairing levees, presents to-day the most ex traordinary instance of seir-punish-ment on record. He is hopelessly blind.and the afflictiou is the work of his own hands. Deinpsey was in Monroe last week, after having com pleted his job on the levee, an indul ged freely in drink. He left towu Saturday or Sunday, and strayed off into the woods. He was found iip rear of Judge Baker's place, on Wed nesday, with both eyes out. Deinp sey tells us that he thought there was a punishment demanded of him for Ids sins that there was a strug gle for his soul and it was required of him to destroy his eyes,, as a penance for his sins. An . examina tion by Drs. Murphy and Aby shows that while the eye balls are not torn out both are badly crushed and the sense of sight totally de stroyed.
