BATTLE OF KI.Ki'a MOUN TAIN. We present in t li in issue a plan of the Rattle of King's Mountain. The cut ros originally for the fn vrrwi'y Magazine to illustrate a de scription of the battle written by Qeu'l. Joseph Graham, and which was 'preserved In the memoranda of Judge Murphy. Such reminiscences seem particu larly appropriate at the present time, when the history of the Jst has burst upon us with renewed fretdi ueHS, a nd w lien the Incidents of the revolutlan are brighteneil with the charm of romance, and they fverve so effectually to kindle again the tires of patriotism and draw the lately servercd sections of the American Union once sgaln Into friendly em brace, and revive the fteliugs which once animated tho whole people fighting in oue cause and for one common object. We are compelled to give a mere outlius of the battle, as the narrative ofOen'I Graham Is too long for re produeture here. After the disastrous defeat of Gen. Gates at Camden, on the K:h of Au gust 17S0, many of his soldiers pass ed over into North Carolina, while a portion of them, mountain men, retreated to the uper part of South Carolina, whoharrased the tory et llements in that section. Lord Corn wall Is dipatched Col. Ferguson with a force of 710 regulars and about the same number of, totie's to interceptor overtake the "rebel." He wan well supplid with arm and equipments, and pushing on to Oil be r towu In North Carolina, he found hi force Increased to about one thou and meu. Col. Charles McDowell, of Burke, finding that Tarieton had so large a force, went across the mountains, and in oonsulation with Col. John Sevier and Col. Isaac Shelby, deter mined to raise all the meu possible, and meet on the bunks of thu Wa tauga ou the 35 of Sept. Information waacenvayed to Col. William Camp bell of Virginia, and on the day op pointed he met them with a consid erable force. They were joined after they left the camp on the WaUuga by Col. Benja min Cleaveland and Major Joseph Winston from Wilkes and Surry. On examining the forces, they were found to number as follow : From Washington Co.,Va.,un underCol. W. Campbell, From Sullivan Co., N. C, uuder Col. Isaac Shelby, From Washington, N. C, under Col. John Sevier, From Burke and Rutherford, un der Col. Charles McDowell, From Wilkes and Sorry, under Col. Ben). Cleaveland and Maj. James WiriBton, 400 240 240 100 n.50 Total, 1300 The temporary command of this force was given toCol. Willian Camp bell, Col. Charles Campbell being despatched to headquarters to get Gen'l Sumner or GenM Davidson to take command. Shortly after this, information was received that Ferguson had left Gi Iber town in full retreat, and the patriots started in foil pursuit. They came to theCowpens on the night of the 5th of October, where Ferguson had en camped the uight before. Here they were Joined by Col. Williams of South Carolina with four hundred men, and sixty men from Lincoln county un der Col. Hambrite and Major Chro nicle. Continuing th? pursuit, on the 7th they met a lad by the name of Fonderln In an old field. The lad had a brother and relations in Fer guson's camp, and from information obulned from hlna the plan of the battle was formed. It was resolved that the force should be equally di vided, one part going to the right to occupy the South East side of the mountain, the other should go to the Northwest side, and move forward uutlll they formed a junction, and then all face to the front and then prtsstbe enemy up the sides of tba mountain. All orders were promptly carried out, and when the had passed tbe top of the moun - SURRENDER OF THE TROOP. Here at 3 o'clock, they dis mounted and placed f.heir horses un der a guard, and then moved forward t the fight. "Each division moved off steadily to the p!ace assigned then in the or der of tattle. Some of the regiments suffered much under thegalling fire of t lie enemy before they were in position to engage in the action. Some complaints began to be uttered that it would never do to be shot down without returning the fire. Col. Shel by replied "pass on to your places ami then your lire will not be lost. The men led by Shelby and Mc Dowell were soon closely engaged, and the contest from the first was very severe. Williauisand Cleaveland were soon iu their places, and with the utmost energy engaged the foe. Ferguson, limling that the en-1 of his line was giving way, ordered for ward hia regulars and riflemen with bayonets and m iIo a furious charge upon Shelby and McDowell, char ging down the mountains some two hundred yards'. A united and de structive lire soon compelled him to order his party back to the top of the mountain. To ward oil' the deadly attack from Col. Williams, Furguson again charged witli fury down the moun tains; when Shelby's meu saw this, they raised the cry "come on men, itie enemy is retreating." Ferguson's men ag-tin charged upon Shelby, but not so far as before. Col. Willium's men in turn, called out, "the enemy is retreating, come on men." At this stage of action, Hambrite and Winston had met, and a brisk tire was poured upou Ferguson's men all around the mountain. As he w-ould advance towards Campbell, Sevier, Winston and Hambrite, he was pursued by Shelbj-, McDowell, Williams and Cleveland. When he would turn his forcera gainst the lat ter, the former would press on in pursuit. Thus he struggled on, ma king charges and retreats, but his left was tapidly losing ground. His men were rapidly falling before the skillful aim and unbending courage of the Whigs. Even nfter being wounded, he fought ou with courage. He made every efl'irt that could be done by a brave and skillful otticer, according to his position. At length he was shot dead, aud his whole com mand driven up into a group of sixty yards in length, and not forty in width. The British officer, Capt. Depeys ter, who took the commaud, ordered u white flag to ba raised iu token of surrender, but the bearer was 'in stantly shot down. He soon had an other raised, and called out for quar ter. Col. Shelby demanded, if they surrendered, why they did not lay down their arms. It was instantly done. But still the firing was continued, until Shelby and Sevier went inside the lines, and ordered the men to cease. Some who kept it up, would call out, " give them Buford's play." Alluding to Col. Buford's defeat by Tarlton, where no quarters were giv en. A guard was placed over the prisoners and all remained on the moiiutaiu during the night. The party which led the left wing under Col. Hambrite, suffered very much, having to pass very difficult grouud to reach their peace of desti nation, and within eighty yards of the enemy's marksmen. Col. Ham brite was wounded, and MajorChron icle was killed. Col. Williams, of South Carolina, a brave and efficient officer, was also killed. The loss of the Whigs was not exactly ascertain ed, but believed to be about thirty killed and fifty wouuded. The en emy had aboutone hundred and fifty killed, and all the rest taken prison ers. On the morning of the Sth, a court martial was held, several of the pris ners who were found guilty of mur der and other high crimes, were sentenced to be hanged. About twenty were executed. French Economy. A French family can live and live well, on less than would be considered sufficient to save from starvation an American family of the same numbers. An in telligent Bostonian, who had spent some years in France, said to me last summer, in speaking of tbe econo mical habits and skill in cookery of tbe French people, that a French village of a thousand inhabitants could be supported luxuriously on the waste of one of our large American hotels. The remark was ' not far from the truth. If the art of cookery were . understocd arid practiced in the United States as it is in France ; if our people knew as well how to make most of their provisions as the French do, the cost of living; as far as food is regarded. In most of the States would be reduced more than fifty per cent. Domestic economy, as a rule, is neither practiced nor uu derstood by Americans as it is in France. It may not be too much to say that the entire population of France could be supported on food which is literally wasted In tlie U. States. The number of people who live beyond their Income is less, and the, numbertof those whose incomes exceed their expenditures Is greater in Franc In 1 proportion" to popula tion, than in any other country. ; PRICE : FIVE CENTS. Af ter a caution to the audience by the Judge to keep entirely quiet, Mr. Evarta began his address for the de fense, occupying the entire session of the court. His remarks were, in the main, introductory only, describing the diversities and extraordinary magnitude of the case, saying that it would require fabulous powers to grasp, explore and to throw light upon it. Reference was made to the verdict of the Committee of Six, which, counsel thought, should have satisfied all candid and honest minds. But Beecher had again to submit his case u a court of the plaintiff's own choosing, where they, had been for five mouths, in weather as cold as the night which in troduced Mr. Moulton and Mr, Beecher's friendship, and that to a degree as warm as that of that 2d Of June on which Mrs. Moulton smoth ered Mr. Beecher's grief with an afghan. Counsel , contended that this attack of Tilton was not so much upon Beecher as it was on public morality. Allusion was made to Mrs. Woodhull, who, he said, had rent asunder the entire decalogue. The incredibility and improbability of such a crime having been com mitted by "two such excellent peo ple" was strongly dealt upon. Con cluding, counsel after an explana tion to the jury of the nature and value of circumstantial evidence, commented with much severity upon the character of the evidence intro duced by the plaintiff.
