Gales and Battle made a j owerful argument In behalf of the Conveution, and Messrs. Jones and Holland made plain but exceedingly practical ad dresses, their argument being of that character which goes straight to the minds of the people of the country. "Muffin" Dick is said to have even surpassed his former elforts in dema gogism and in his abuse of that race with which nature destined him to associate. At a mass meeting of the citizens of Wake, Johnston and the adjoining counties, i held on the 12th Inst., in Panther Branch Township, in reference to the horrid murder of Mrs. Scott Par tin and her Infant ten months old, J. After a short absence, the committee reported the following resolutions, which were unanimous ly adopted : Whereas, It Is the duty of all good citizens to interpose their Influ ence, at all times, and under all cir cumstances, in the protection of the helpless and innocent, and tbe pun ishment of the vicious and guilty, and . Stabbed ia the Breast ia a Difficulty at Forestville, ai-d ia n Sinking Coaditiaa. j PARTlVirLARS OF THE SAD A HAIR! PK IA1. To HAII-Y NEWS Forest vir,i,E, N. ( .. July 27. After the Convention candidates had finished speaking at thin place this afternoon un. unfortunate, and it is feared fatal a fl'ray occu rred between Samuel Merrill, Esq., of Raleigh, and Richard Thompson, of this placn. The parlies became engaged in a dispute, resulting in angry words, when Mr. Thompson stabbed Mr. Merrill with a knife in the left breast near the heart, inflicting, the Doctor think, a fatal wound. Up to this hour, p. in., the wounded mania alive but Is slowly sinking, and no hoe4 arc entertained of his recovery. After inflictiug the cut, Thompson immediately threw his knife away and left the place. Efforts' are being made tor hid arrest. The citizens of our quiet little vil- lagv are quite excited over theterri- bie affair, but are doing what they can for the wounded mail's comfort. It is said the two men bad been upon friendly terms hitherto. Dl EK. The news of this sad affair caused much excitement in oi r community last night, Mr. Merrill being well aud favorably known in this com munity, and at 'J o'clock a special train iet't the R. & G. Depot to con vey the wife of Mr. Merrill, his fami ly phyiciaul aud several members of his Lodge oft U.I Fellows, of which order he is a high official, for the purpose of bringing him to Ral eigh if possible. Mr. Thompson, the man who in flicted the fatal wound, is a mould r bv trade, work ed for some years at the Separk foundry in this city, and has recently been engaged at the foundry at Forestville. Theorigiu of the difficulty, it is thougnt, was the fact that Thompson was in debt to Merrill for groceries, which debt the latter was endeavoring to collect. Thompson is said to le a man of a violent character. In the name of the whole commun ity, we earnestly express the wish that Mr. Merrill may recover, though from other information obtained last night it is not thought probable he can do so. The Pan Francisco Alta of July 12, says: he grape crop promises to be good in the State generally, and is unusually large iu some districts near San Francisco bay, and scanty in some others, especially about Los Angelos and San Gabriel. A frost which came in the latter part of April was very severe at Los An gelos, and in the early pruned vine yards, where the shcx ts were far ad vanced, the loss is complete, while at Anaheim, where the frost was lighter and the pruning had beeu done late, there will be a good yield. The bananas at San Gabriel were cut down, and it is admittiug now that they cannot be grown with a profit on the southern coast, unless at pla ces exceptionally free from frost, either near the ocean or on the hill sides. The orange trees were not injured, but it is thought the orauge cion of next wiuter will be small." The civilized Indians and half breeds of the Cherokee appear to be no less savage than the worst of the whites in Texas, Arkansas, and other Southwestern States. A most san guinary fight occurred among these people on the 18th instant, growing out of political differences between the Ross and Downing parties on the question of the chieftainship. Three persons were instantly killed, one of whom received in his body the contents of seven double-barreled shot-guns loaded witli buckshot, and another deadly fight followed on tbe next night. If the Indian Territory were a State, we presume the Presi dent would send General Sheridan out there to subdue these banditti, but as they have no "put" in Con gress or national conventions, they will, doubtless be left to fight it out on their line, "if it takes all sum mer." The party having the most arms and ammunition will most probably win. When we look around and see the large number of able-bodied men who spend their money md their time at the beer saloons, while their wives are stitching tit home, or go out washing to earn money to keep themselves aud their children from starving, we uaturally wouder why more young men don't get married, and marvel more, that su many young ladies do. How the Time j peut at Beau fort What Raleighiies are There aud Thing ia General. Beaufort, NT. C, July 26th, 1875. I am punctual to a day, having re ceived your letter to tako the place of your "negligent correspondent" who 1 must say seems to be enjoying him self iu the way Woodson would best like. You will hardly believe that my thoughts in pity stray up to the old News office knowing uo such breeze as we have is wafting there. I am going to take my happy and pleasant furlough as a News"' correspondent has a right to do and not as one of the envied editors of that popular paper. Mr. James Fulford desires me to say iu this that your "negligent corres pondent" made a mistake in stating that he. was, going to send you a barrel of clams, shouldvhave been a barrel ofsoft crafts aud a box of "sand fiddlers" for John G.. Willms,Esq , which he says are a great luxury. Iu connection with gifts, Dr. Black n a II writes me, he has for mean imported "Sooner" dog. Please name him ninety (90) and let Woodson keep him until the season-is over, then I'll claim him if he is a good dog. Hotels and boarding houses are full and the boarders all have that sen side vice of playing "old muggins" wi tii some "draw polker" at intervals. By the courtesy of our clever Hotel ' proprietors of the Ocean aud Atlantic Houses, hops are enjoyed by the young people nearly every night. Our old friend J. Atwater, froma Chatham, came here almost a con firmed invalid from "paralysis" and to show what sea breeze and enjoy ment cau do, is now the chief ball manager at the Ocean, and participa tes in the fantastic. He says Chat ham is for the News. "Truthful James" is here that virtue having beeu discovered by Dr. T. D. Martin. The only reason given is that he can laugh as loud as "honest Dave" our Couuty Treasurer. Our Bar is well represented by Messrs. Moore, Mer rimon and Ashe, and the Medical by Dr. F. J. Haywood, Jri; the first two of the most prominent in their pro fession iu the State, the two others named with their qualifications destined, merchants we have A. B. Stronach and.R. F. Jones, successful in all their enterprises, and looking all around, I do not see a mean man from the City of Oaks. The season for blue fishing has opened soon, and trolling parties are constant'y out. Sheep heads are scarce and even our frieud Porter has no luck. By the way, he says the "Oak City" is at the service of the corps of News editor?. Comedown and enjoy sailing in the best boat on these waters. I have not dared to mention the ladies untif after the ball at the Atlantic House on the 28th, when I will be sure to give a full account of behavior, beauty and dress. Beaufort. For the Dally News. Steamer "Old Dominion" At, Sea, July, 2oth 1875. j Dear Neics; Idrop youa line from this floating palace, now ploughing Neptune's unruffled domain at the rate of fifteen miles an hour. There is no wind, no swell, and therefore no sea-sickness, although there are many ladies ou board. We have a very pleasant crowd of passengers aud feel perfectly at home in the hands of the excellent officers of the steamer. A few sail in sight lazily llap their white wings as if impatient under their enforced halting, and "All tbe aid a solemn st illness holds.'' . Indeed, I have 'seen much heavier weather on the "proud, foaming cfest" of "Crabtreo" and the "calm serene breast" of Penny's mill pond. The quiet is unbroken except by the heavy thud of the stroke of the en gines and the occasional merry, ring ing laughter of Bome"Bounie lassie," or the more discordant but not the less frequent lachrymal demand of some dear little year old, or precoci ous urchin, that all things else le "laid on the table," in the shape of au isuie of Bonbons from capacious baskets or repeated tripsfrom lower to huiicane decks. The absence of incident is rendering the trip thus far really monotonous. Don't know wliat may happen be tween here and New York. There! I have au item. The ship's crew have just beeu piped to" quarters under a false alarm. This is a practice of thi line every trip to perfect the men in these duties. They are never of course informed when these alarmsare to be sounded, notwithstanding which each man just a moment ago leaped into his place by life boats, pumps and fire engines with au alacrity and mili tary precision, truly astonishing to a land lubber Jike myself. This over, everything has again assumed a somnolent air. Had the pleasure of traveling from Raleigh to Portsmouth with Governor W. A. Graham, his lady an J his son A. W. Graham. Devoted ns I am to my mother State thy heart swells with pride in seeing her represented abroad by the commanding presence jind wjse statesmanship of this her beloved and honored son. Besides his other ac complishments as an erudite scholar and courtly, urbaue geLtleman, he is 'eally, (so to speak,) a living en cyclopedia of historic lore. His able address in maintenance and proof of the8Uthenlicity of the "'Mecklenburg Declaration" has already brought to shameful silence those few euvious journals of other States who were wont to stamp that document a "gig antic fraud." Gov. Graham inform ed me, on enquiry, that Gov. Allen of Ohio,Ex-Sehator Cbnrad of Louis iana, aud himself are the only sur viving members of the U. 8. Senate of the 27th Congress. May they long survive as pointers to a distant retros pect of purity in politics and by their counsel and presence among ns aid us in rearing on the "shattered and dismembered fragments" of civil lib erty an honest government like that in which they were active and pro minent participants; ;;: " LONG, LONG AGO." I also met Senator Ransom on his PRICE: FIVE CENTS. way lpme. Attached by his personal magnetism, as usual, time slipped unheeded by or surrendered to the magic of his instructive and brilliant conversational powers; He has been indisposed of late, but will nevertheless canvass vigorously for our Convention candidates until the election. Two "Tar Heels" i aboard besides myself, the well known Don ald Macauly, cotton and commission merchant of Charlotte, and Mr. Ed. Womble, of .Newberne.! ' Years have elapsed since J. met my friend Donald Mac. 1 detected him in ttie dark1 by his Scottish! accent and. our . meeting was, you maybe sure, quite the re verse of that of the crans of Roderick Dhu aud Fitz James. iiTo the energy of such men as. Mr. Mae. .is due to a great extent the growth and tfiirft of ChariotleRalelg-h, &c. If i; could be heard irojn ,SoJ ray to Lake Kat rine, I would qry aloud that we have roortf in ourheart?, IP' our fertile val leys, and in, our mountain- forests for thousands of just such Scots. Was just beginning'to think that I. should mike the trio to New. York without meeting with one of these public benefactors, insurance agents or sewing machine agents, when yes terday suddenly loomed up before my vision, Mr. C. W. Harris, the Napo leon of insurance in Georgia, and Mr. Wormell, of Newberne, a successful machine man. ' We ate now passing Long Branch, the Fontainbleau, of the Grant dynasty. Flag after Aug on the hotels and other buildings are being lower ed as a salute to our noble ship, while we in return, give three blasts to each frdm our double bass engine whistle. We shall reach New Y ork in two hours when I will mail this letfcr aud will from time to time keep 3ou iuformed of events transpiring t here. " VlDENS. " Vagrants in Springfield are made to pay for a lodging and breakfast by work on public, improvements from 7 o'clock until 11 in the morn ing. An overseer watches them closely, because they are always ready after having the sleep and food to get away without giving the. re quired equivalent. Ten of them were recently cleaning brick in the burned blocks. A horse ran away, the overseer went to catch it,, and when became back not one of his gang was there. rON'TMAKEWAK ON THE 8TOMAt:U. if you are bilious, dyspeptic and oonsll paled, don't make war on the stomach bv ucceaslveiy swallowing b!ufe pills," strong W M"' v .uu puweriui asi ri ligttnu. ucn a procedare damages digestion and weak ens tbe bowels, leaving stomach, liver and intestines, after the immediate effect.
