' The market opened Brm at unchanged prices to aa advance of 30 points ami told 40. to 60 pointa net higher before the end of the first hour with all the active positions going through the 35- eeat level. Brokers with Liverpool, Japaa and domestic trade connections mtt boyert oa the advance, while there .wae also a good demand from Wall ' Street sources which carried December p to 35.4 and January to 35.30. The demand then tapered off somewhat and offerings increased, accompanied by re ports that the Sooth was selling freely and realizing was promoted by the ore favorable average of weather and trop news. This was absorbed on n K!e down by continued trade buying and covering, but last prices were only a few points up from the low level of tke morning. According to Washington advices, a Considerable amount of cotton hat been accumulated in neutral countries for shipment to Germany aa soon as prac ticable, and there nccmed to be some division of p i ii :o n here as to the vol ass of li maud that may be exacted to reault from the resumption of busi ness. . , High. COTTON AT HIGHEST EVER IN CONTRACT TRADING July Forced Up To 35.35 Centg; Kct Gain All Months 22 To 3 5 Points New Orleans, La., July 12. Ooiinr sastioa of the reports regarding imme diately lifting of the blockade against Germany put the price of cotton to the highest levels ever recorded in tho - history of contract trading today, July being forced up to 33-35 eenta a pound. It wws aot a very active market but the undertone was very steady end 'values were wall sustained in the faeo of considerable realising from the long side, although after the initial bulge tho market did aot break into new high ground. Little else was considered by traders but the probability of larger exports and a better spot demand aa the result of opea commerce with Germany. On the opening, brokera had a large volume f baying orders to All and in exeeut iag these the market took on derided strength. Before the session was very old the trading months were 42 to 50 points higher than the clot of yester day. Starting at a moderate pace, todsy's brief session of the stock market soon beesme active and extensive on . renewed buying of speculative shares, especially tobaceot and motor accessories. Later the movement embraced equip ments, shippings, steels and miscellan eous issues, also low priced rails, with Denver and Bio Grande preferred the chief feature at a gain of virtually 5 points. U. 8. Steel was variable at the outset but developed marked strength toward the close, ginning almost 2 mints, while Crucible Bleel madu a sudden rlso of '8 points. Coppers were not very .responsive to the SU cent price quoted for the re fined metnl, although Annsonda, Utah find American Smelting hardened with the general list in the sweeping uprush at the end. The more prominent festuree were American and Lorillnrd Tobaccos, I'nited Cigars, Ajus Kubber, Kelly Springfield snd Keystone Tires, tT. B. Kublier, Mexican and PRn-Ainerican Petroleums, Gulf States, Kttel, Central Foundry, I'ennt. Kcabonrd Steel and several of the Food issues. The bank statement presented no noteworthy changes, actual loans show ing only a nominal increase despite the week's active stock dealings, whilo an increase of about tL'0,650,0011 in reserves represented only a partial recovery of the preceding week's large contraction. Trading in bonds lacked special fea ture but Litieity issues and underlying bonds of secondary trnnsporations were steady to firm. Old I'nited States bonds wcro unchanged on call during the week. New York, July 12. Cotton goods markets continue very strong with prices rising to still higher levols. flu v. Ing is cheeked by the inability of mills to nil orden snd of merchants to sup. ply all the goods called for. Many large offers of eiport trade have had to lie declined through inability to make deliveries. Print clothes sre up nbout le a yard, tome Unci of branded blenched cottont have been advanced 21-2e and 5c a yard, staple ticking! were advanced 10c a yard and many lines of brown snd colored cottons sro higher. Several lines of wash fabrics have been opened for the spring tea son of 1920 and the application of buy era haa been very active. The attend ance of buyers in the markete it much larger than usual, both wholesale and retail. Mnde-up goods spiear to be as scarce as fabrics. Many Unci of mer chandise are now priced above the gov ernment ned price level or the war period while a number of prices for yarns hnvo run above the government levels. It ia the impression of selling: agents for large mills that conditions as to buying will grow worse tt ths fall season sdvsnres owing to the slow pro duction in mill centres. There it a wide varintion in quotations due to the tell ing from aecond-handt to reap profits accrued from the rise.
