JOURNAL-PATRIOT & i&k. £1^;*■ . :„• £®§ >4 Dwight Nichols, Sports Editor Mountain Lions Tie Spencer 7-7 North Wilkeaboro Outplays Conference Leaders Here Orf Friday Night Spencer may hare been lead ing the South Piedmont Confer ence, bat it didn't mean anything to North Wllkesboro's Mountain Lions here Friday night. They outplayed. Spencer and the Bcore was a 7-7 tie, but with even breaks the score could have been 14-0 in favor of the Lions. On a most unusual play Spen cer took the lead with seven points in the first quarter. The Mountain Lions had driven to Spencer's one-yar<j line and Brad Davis was all set to carry the ball over for. a North Wilkes boro touchdown, but the heart breaking play resulted In a Spen cer touchdown. The high pass from center bounced oft Davis' rfhoulder Into the air and Wlnecoff, Spencer's big and fast left end, broke through, took the fumble in the air and raced 98 yards to score. Rhymer kicked the point and the score was 7-0 in favor of Spencer. \ Pass interceptions by Rous seau and Caudill stopped Spen cer's threats In the second and third periods and the teams were playing about even in yardage gained and first downs. To open the final period Badgett raced 40 yards and Davis picked up 15. In two tries Davis went over jtnd Rousseau scored the extra point from scrimmage to tie up the game 7-7. North Wil kesboro put on another bid for score when Badgjet raced 30 yards but a 15-yard penalty ruined the opportunity a few plays later. Hudson kicked out on the 3 to put Spencer in a hole but the visitors put on a sustain ed march that ended in a brok en up pass attack in the final series of downs. Friday night's game before a large crowd was perhaps the most closely contested a^nd hard est played in recent years. Spen cer was the heavier team but North Wilkesboro, playing well in every position, was able to stop every scoring threat except the freak play which started as a toucfhdown for North Wilkes boro and resulted In seven points for Spencer. The game was broadcast over radio station WILX. Friday of this week at eight p. m. North Wilkesboro willp ylaETedstSH Wilkesboro will play the strong Barium Springs eleven here.
