This Is Season ■ II Iw Iw %Pw®vWlI For Apple Scab Last week Dr^ C. N. Clayton, plant pathologist at N. e. state college, visited orchards In the Brushy Mountains to check on the development of apple scab. He found out that the apple scab ■fungus which lives over the win ter in old apple leaves on the ground has matured Its spore or 'seed". No doubt some scab in fection took place during the rainy period a week ago. Howev er, the showers which came dar ing the early morning of March 31 and again Sunday afternoon I did not cause apple scab Infection i because the new leaves and buds dried off in less than eight hours. The next time we have a rain which keeps the leaves WET a day or all night or both there will be plenty of apple scab in fection taking place UNLESS — — fruit grower# have their orchards well sprayed with one of the sul fur fungicides before the rain. Last Spring the growers that had the least amount of Bcab on their fruit (In some cases, none at all) put on an extra spray of the paste-type wettable sulfur. This extra application Is very Im portant. T^ien the bloom period is long-drawn out as It is likely, to be this year. The grower should pay particular attention to varieties, Such as red delicious, that are very susceptible to scab. As Dr. Clayton pointed out when he was here: "It.is very, Important to keep scab Infection from getting started on the new leaves and fruit, for once a scab spot develops, thousands of new spores (or seed) are produced on it to cause other Infections'*. "Let's keep 'em covered'' with lime sulfur or wettaible sulfur paste. o Support The Red Cross TAKE A BUSINESS COURSE Accounting or Secretarial. Ap proved for Veterans.
