THE JOURHAL-PATRIOT SPORTS BRIEFS Robert Gambill, business man ager of the North Wllkesboro Flashers, reports that a number of Wilkes and northwest North Carolina players will be in spring training here beginning April 10 and will be given every oppor tunity to make the team. North Wllkesboro high school boys have been showing a lot of hustle In spring practice for base ball. The boys are young and small hot their's Is the age where baseball players are start ed. At Wllkesboro football pros pects appear to be as good as ever and in spring practice last; year's reserves have shown much knowhow, some of which they ac quired by getting to play much during last season. Baseball players generally port minor leagues are tightening purse strings with lower salaries. We don't blame any player for trying to get the most salary pos sible, but Class D baseball can not continue and suffer financial losses such as most elobs had last year. Everybody might as wen faee the facts, however unfav orable the facts may be. The club here last year suffer ed a terrible loss In baseballs. More than twice the average num ber required for a season were used and lost. If fans want base ball they will have to be more tolerant In returning balls hit off the playing field. Last year here there was an organized band of young boys who made a rac ket of taking balls hit over the fence. The elub will have to find ways of stopping that waste. Johnny Mercak has been work ing out regularly with the Greens boro Patriots of the Carolina lea gue at Bartow, Florida. Manager Bernie Loman ■kias been doing some scouting In mountain counties north and west of here.
