Oct. 15, 1853. 84 An Appeal. T(j all Gentleman Visiters to my Eilablisment, (n snsfain me in Matters if principle. THE leading motive of my starting a Vineyard va to help discourage the horrid vice of drunk enness a vice not prevalent in wine-making countries. But I find that selling ardent spirits, even as a medicine, tends to promote the very vice, that all good citizens, not to say christians, abhor. And my only purpose of procuring ardent spir its in any quantity is for making wine. Therefore, and for many other reasons, I might tis-ign. pray, gentlemen, have me excused "from elliug any more spirits, as a medicine. Pray, go elsewhere or to some appropriate place for that medicine. wherever the liberty de stroying Maine law (of abolition origin and yet confined to abolition-going States) the agent of the abolition sons of Temperance to monopolize tor his employers all the money profits of liquor sales, is compelled to sell to all, saying "the want liquor as a medicine." And hence, as from most reliable information, not only the vice of drunkenness, but that of ly ing, also, is fearfully advancing in the State of Maine, where time has tested the practical perni cious effects of that tyrannically despotic law. But I am not bound in any way to sell spirits un less, as a doctor, to feel my patients' pulse, or otherwise to judge it necessary to prescribe spirits as a medicine. '.- In which case I can by law exact a fee; at least, until a certain Raleigh clique of doctors carry out their purpose as tyrannically despotic and monopo lizing as Maine law society plots, against primary liberty, or make no doctor fees collectable in the St ite unless under law license from them. Ac cording to Maine law despots no sales of liquors but from their agent. ANOTHER APPEAL. ' f To ladies, as well as gentlemen ; and that is not to prevent me or my family from spending the Sabbath otherwise than as a divine institution, preparatory to the eternal Sabbath of rest in Heaven. :' , Or, if not having church, or religious exercises appropriate to the day at our own house, any or all but one or a mere house-keeper may have the christian privilege of attending church elsewhere. A hint to the really wise and -genteel is -always "sufficient." And I am r truly thankful for hun dreds of visiters of this character weeks pastor so far in Vineyard visitations of the season. . Most respectfully towards all concerned. . S. WELLE R. Brinkleyville, X. C, Oct21, '53. ,86 1 1LESH Gloves and Brushes, for "producing a healthy action of the system. For sale by -WILLIAMS & HAYWOOD.
