It was true. Mona Leslie, star of one of the Texas exposition’s most colorful pageants, strutted haughtily out on her Job. She had her reasons. And the management was consider ably perturbed. Where in Dallas or Fort Worth could be found a girl with the courage, talent and natural charm to pinch hit for a Venus? And a div ing Venus who has to do a perilous act, at that! The management didn't know it, but at the moment she was musing over the past, present and future in one of Dallas’ better cocktail bars—and about resolved to turn her pretty back on Texas, probably forever. Her name was Lisa Chauvez. She was beautiful. She was 22. Only a few days before her engagement as a little-known dancer in an exposi tion show place had ended. In other words, she was out of a job. Dis couraged, she was ready to go back to Chicago. ‘‘The show must go on!” the maestros were chorusing in true melodramatic style. But they didn’t know where to look for a Venus. What they needed was a beautiful girl who was able not only to dance enticingly in the semi-nude, but one SHE WALKED OUT Beautiful Mona Leslie, the Texas Centennial Ex position’s “Diving Ven us,” Who Left Her Job. who could swim and dive gracefully. In case the thought hadn’t occurred to _ you, it takes a person with consider able lung power to go through a dance routine and then dive and awim under water. The act is full of danger for the performer. Lots of nerve and confidence, as well as talent, was required of the Venus who figured in the pageant’s spectacle. Against a background of old Vienna, and to the tune of "Moon light Madonna," the terpsichorean composition, based on s classic legend, is presented. It opens with the pantomime of a young man making love to a girl on the brink of * pool. He is all atten tion to his fair partner until a "statue'' of Venus rises from out of the water. Suddenly the “statue" comes to life and dances, concluding the imagina tive classical dance by climbing to a springboard over the sparkling pool and executing a swan dive. She re SHE HAS CHARM. The glamorous number had attracted centennial visitors from far and near. Now there was no Venus. The man agers were frantic—and Lisa Chauvec, all unknowing, sat musing at the cocktail bar. But—to relieve all this suspense— Lisa’s booking agent heard of the search, suggested her, and located her in the nick of time. So it happened that Lisa Chauvez, jobless and on the point of leaving for her home in Chicago, wan rushed back to the dressing room in jig-time. Al most in a daze she found herself mak tag up for the part of the popular div ing Venus, which Isn’t very difficult because she doesn’t wear scarcely any thing except a film of olive oil to shed water and reflect diffused light In her very first appearance, almost without a rehearsal, Lisa Chauves vir tually brought down the house. In dashing split seoonds she dived to tame. And she has been doing It con sistently ever since. She became a big star of the Texas pageantry, a more spectacular attraction than Sally Rand and other famous acts, over night Movie scouts turned their at tention upon her. And this la how theatrical stars are sometimes made—by nerve and luck. HE’S COINING MONEY AS A RIVAL TO KING EDWARD! 1 MUCH Is being made of the fact that a charming American is today closest to the occupant of the throne of Brltian. But an Ameri can would be the actual occupant if his efforts had any chance of success. Chance or not, he is still devising ways to attract attention to his claims that he is the empire’s right ful ruler. He has just turned out a batch of currency which bears an en graving of his picture instead of that of King Edward, whose coronation is not far away, and is exchanging it for notes of the Bank of England to get funds for the Tudor restoration. He’s even hinting at staging a rival coro nation! He claims 50,000 followers and has invited them to a great “restora tion banquet” at Buckingham Palace —when—and if. The handsome pretender—he is now in his thirties—has been campaigning for recognition for years in England. As long as five years ago he served the late King George with notice to re linquish his rights to the crown and leave England “because you have no connection with the British Royal family.” “King Anthony,” born Anthony W. Hall, is the son of an American citi zen and received his early education in California. Now he has made Here ford, England, his “capital." His two brothers, Don Ambrose Hall and Ro bert Eyre Hall, are both American citizens and today are residing in San Francisco. They, apparently, do not share Anthony’s aspirations. “King Anthony" Hall claims to be the illegitimate descendant of Henry VIII on his father’s side, and the legiti mate descendant of King Edward I on his mother’s side. According to his computations the late King George had no connection whatever with the British Royal family, being but the great grandson of a German duke. In the latest of his annual mani festos “King Anthony” refers to His Majesty, King Edward, merely as “Mr. Edward Wettin, member of a secon dary German family.” Hall declares he is a direct descendant of the Tu dors and has often been referred to as “Prince Anthony of Tudor.” More tolerant than the Tudor ancestors he claims, the “usurper” Wettins have not attempted to curb Anthony’s campaign. Once, however, he did run afoul of the British law by his attempts to re move the late monarch from his throne and himself wield Britain’s diamond studded sceptre. At that time be was held without bail on charges of "us *ng quarrelsome and slanderous lan guage” in his efforts to convince the citizenry of Britain that he was en titled to the ermine of royalty. The ALL READY TO ASCEND THE BRITISH THRONE (?) Here’s an Exclusive Portrait of Anthony W. Hall, American Born Pretender to the Throne of England. “King Anthony,” as He Has Become Known Throughout Britain, Has Even Gone So Far as to Have Printed Currency Bearing an Engraving of His Own Features. citizenry a short lime previously had laughed him off a speaker’s platform. With typical arrogance “King An thony” protested his arrest and an nounced that the court into which he was hailed had no jurisdiction what ever. The be-wigged magistrate be fore whom he appeared cut him short with a peremptory order remanding him to jail for an indefinite period. No sooner out of jail than the young pretender to the throne issued another manifesto again demanding the abdi cation of ihe King. Included in the startling program he outlined, which, he declared, “will form the basis of my campaign in the country later," were the following Items: “Standing army to be disbanded; in come and all estate duties to go; taxes to be removed from tobacco and ciga rettes; two-cent postage; all beer taxes to be abolished, and the abolition of entertainment and radio taxation.” You’ve r'"t My Thr Says American to British Ruler IT’S WORTHLESS, OF COURS*. A Close-Up of the Currency De signed by "King Anthony” Hall, Engand’s Most Persistent Pretend er to the Crown. Hall Claims to Be a Direct Descendant of the Tudors. “King Anthony” is not the only royal claimant to have aired hia views in the past few years. Not very long ago Clarence Guy Gordon-Haddon came to international notice when he was arrested and placed on trial at the historic Old Bailey Court In London. Gordon-Haddon was charged with having demanded |3,000 a year from King George as his price to keep mum on his claim that he was the illegiti mate son of the monarch’s dead brother, the Duke of Clarence. It was only after intensive investi gation by Scotland Yard that Gordon Haddon was prosecuted. As in the case of Hall, Gordon-Haddon once lived In America. In fact he once fig ured in a court case in New York City involving royalties on a book which he had planned to write about his lineage. At that time his story was that he was the child of the Duke of Clarence and Mrs. Henry Edmund Hatton, wife of a British Army officer. He contended that the Duke and his Copyright, 1886.
