Vol. 4 McLean Seeks Change In Polk Coantg Liquor Act * Asheville Citizen RALEIGH, April 22. Senator W. K. McLean, of Polk county, intro | duced a bill to repeal public local law of 1927, chapter 532, relating to the enforcement of the prohibition law in Polk county, and substituting a provision for leaving the punishment tor public drunkenness more in the hands of the judge. The present law, he explained, makes the mini mum fine for public drunkenness $25, the result being that offenders not able tb pay the fine are confined in the public jail for 30 days, often an unnecessary expense on the county, and probably too severe in seme cases. The new bill provides that “any person who shall be convicted of public dtfcnkenness in Polk county, or who shall be found in a drunken CBr intoxicated condition on any public highway, or at any postoffice, church, school, picnic ground, or other public gathering in said county where people are assembled for any lawful purpose, shall be fined not in excess of SSO or imprisoned for not more than 30 days.” The bill passed the Senate yesterday and was sent to the House. . Landrum Home Destroyed Fire destroyed the old Whitlock home in Landrum between 1 and 2 o’clock this morning. This was one of the finest homes |in Landrum and was owned by Mr. W. J. Shirley whose family * were asleep when the fire started, narrowly escaping death. Lan drum Volunteer Fire Department responded to the alarm and kept the flames from doing further damage. TMting Tournament Success , A bit of medieval days was brought to Harmon Field yesterday afternoon when 12 knights on horses engaged in a tilting tournament. James An drews of Tryon won. Mrs. W.H.Crapo was queen, and rode on a litter borne by tour black slaves. Frank Moore as an old hag led a donkey burdened with wood. Barney Bishop and Hume Fraser were friars riding an old ox cart. Ethan Rippy, herald, Donald Wing, jester, Al. Caldwell, F. Greene, Dick Pollitizer,. L Holmes, and W. Preston, tumblers. The knights were Messrs. N.Jackson, M.Morris,/.Phillips, J. Andrews, Hood, B.Ballenger, F. McDonald, F.Arthur,/ Fuldner, C. Rogers, H. Newman, W.Newmao. Ladies were Mesdames Hale, Blackwell, Washburn, Hood, Hawley, Crapb and Misses Taylpx, Parsons, Poppe and Bradford" All wore cos tumes designed by H. Crandall. A, Est. 1-31-28
