C., UNDER THE 4CT OF CONGRESS, MARCH 3. 1879 Republicans Nominate Ticket for the County The Polk County Republican r -wention was held in Columbus <;^)lnesday afternoon at 2 o’clock lathe county courthouse and nom inated the following persons as can didates in the general election for county officers: R. L. Cole of Green Creek for the Legislature; Fred Arledge of Saluda for County Com missioner; Ed Newman of Colum bus for Sheriff; B. L. White of Green Creek for Register of Deeds James L. Smith of Tryon Route 1 for Coroner and Lewis Denton of Columbus for Surveyor. Golf Results In the tournament for the Presi dent’s cup at the Tryon Country club on Wednesday Lefty Flynn defeated F. P. Bacon 1 up on 18 holes. The contest was a nip and race with a difference of only ^Jup either way. Nelson Jackson, drtf defeated C. H. Conrad 8 up and 7 to go. H. H. Parmelee de feated J. C. Kimberly 2 up and 1 to go. This was another nip and tuck contest. Considerable activity is going on at the Country club this season. New grass greens are being built and larger numbers of people are • enjoying the course during the week-ends. St. Agnes Guild The St. Agnes Guild will meet next Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. E. Perry Manville at her home on Gc^shaw Hill. Democrats to Hold Precinct Meetings Polk County Democrats will hold their precinct meetings on Satur day at 2 o’clock. The Tryon Town ship meeting will be held at the city hall with chairman George E. Bell, presiding. On the following Saturday, May 16, the convention will meet at Columbus at 11 a. m., to elect delegates to the state convention and to transact any business pertaining to the organiza tion. R. M. Hall of Saluda is the county chairman. All Democrats are invited. Rotary At Oak Hall The Trycn Rotary club will meet Friday at 1 n. m.. at Oak Hall hotel with H. L. Shelnutt in charge of the program. President-elect F. P. Bacon will report on the recent Rotary convention held at Char lotte. H F A n T T TV j?' C McDonald leads in state-wide poll for governor.
