Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C„ WEDNESDAY, NOV. 25, 1936~ Our First Russian Letter We have had many communi | cations from foreign countries, * but the following letter from Fred McLaughlin is the first that we have received from Russia and it gives his first-hand impressions of that large country: November 12, 1936. Dear Seth: So many different opinions are current in America concerning Russia that my impressions of the Soviet may interest a few of the Bulletin readers. Surely Mr. Hearst and the American Legion Have been misin formed. The onpression and ten sion so frequently described in our press not only is missing completely but in the main the exact opposite emotions are apparent. The crowds that filled the streets of Lenin grad during their great celebration ®warmlv-dressed, well-fed, carefree The marks of oppression cannot be obliterated by washing the face. The progress being made here is nothing short of phenomenal when one sees and learns from eyewit nesses of conditions that existed 15 years ago. You sense the pulse of this progress, especially in the cities almost from the moment of entering. The spirit of co-opera tion and enthusiasm permeates the working classes (which in cludes everybody) leaves no doubt that a magic formula of some kind for living and working together has been discovered. Where else in Continued on Back Page Saluda Girl Drops Dead While Playing Saluda, Nov. 24.—A very sad and tragic accident occurred at the Saluda high school gymnasium today about 2 o’clock. Ruth Pace, while playing basketball, slipped and fell and died almost instantly. Drs. Fauntleroy and Preston were summoned at once, but the little girl was beyond human aid. Ruth was the eleven-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Pace of Melrose, one of 17 children, 11 of whom are dead. It was a most regrettable but unavoidable accident. Funeral arrangements have not yet beer, made known. Clayton- Ballard Miss Margaret Clayton of Hen dersonville and Mr. Harold Ballard of Tryon were mai'ried on Sun day afternoon in Spartanburg. The n ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mr. Henderson. The groom has a position at McNeely’s and the young couple will make their home in Tryon. Thanksgiving Services *The Union Thanksgiving services of the community will be held on Thursday morning at 11 o’clock at the Congregational church with the Rev. John A. Pinckney of the Church of the Holy Cross preach ing. The Christian Science service I will be held at 11 o’clock at the Lanier library.
