An<j Fiddlin’ John Weaver of Green Creek en tertained with his celebrated fiddle which he has taken to Washington, D. C., and other places in con? tests . . . . Preacher Charles Trammel reports that John Artz, former Polk Agent has been pro moted to assistant state head of the 4-H clubs and also county agent-at-large for the state of North Carolina with headquarters at Raleigh. John is a former presi dent of the Tryon Kiwanis club and has many friends in this coun ty .... Polk County Superior ftCourt begins next Mbnday in Co 'lumbus, and a house furnishing and home management demonstra tion will be given on Mbnday at Green Creek school by Miamie Whisnant, state specialist of Raleigh. Time 2:30. Public in vited .... On next Tuesday the County Agents are promoting a tour of the farms and homes of the county. Anyone interested is invited to join .... Water Sports Carnival Aug. 13, Horse Show 25, Cabaret Party 27, and interesting weekend Continued on back page TRYON, N, C., WED., AUGUST 17, 1938 Williams Rites Held Tuesday Afternoon Funeral services for Stewart Williams, 53, of Columbus, who died Mbnday morning after a long ill ness, were held at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the home of his brother, John N. Williams. The Rev. Malcolm Ross, of Try on, officiated, assisted by the Rev. G. V. Tilley, of Columbus. Burial was in the family cemetery. Neph ews were pallbearers. Mr. Williams, a member of the Columbus Baptist church, was a well-known farmer. Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Minnie Waiker, of Mill Spring; and the following children: Mrs. Hubbard Thomp son, Ruth, Gladys, Boyce, Irene, Howard, George, Betty Jean, Peg gie Joyce and Lorene. Also sur viving are three brothers, John N., William W., and R. Burton Williams, and one sister, Mrs. John Foster. Tryon Motor Co. Personnel Enjoys Outing On Monday Manager C. 0. Smith of the Tryon Motor Company, accompani ed by J. L. Speigel, General Fos ter and W. B. Foster of the force, returned early Tuesday morning from a day’s picnic outing spon sored by the North and Sbuth Carolina Division of the Chevro let Motor Company. The activi ties were held at the Sedgefield Inn, near Greensboro, and consist ed of soft ball, golf and tennis games, wrestling, boxing and va rieties of races. Barbecue and oth er refreshments were served. The outing was given in recognition of an excellent record in the recent Used Car Reduction Campaign.
