Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C., THURSDAY, JAN. 12, 1939 POLK CHICKENS FAIL TO REACH BALTIMORE 4 ‘Who broke the lock on the hen house doorV' * Jonas Biddy, prominent Cooper .Gap citizen, reported to Sheriff W. D. Hines the loss of 15 to 20 nice Buff Leghorn chickens on Tues day night. The sheriff’s force went to work and by methods all their own, by noon Wednesday had landed in jail Wilburn Brown and Adam Wells of Copper Gap and Carl Turner of Green Creek, and charged them with the theft of the chickens. Brown was acquit ted at the last term of Polk Super ior Court when he was charged with stealing a steer. Officers state that he has confessed to steal ing the chickens. The chickens were sold to a man named Moore at Forest City who was buying for a Wilkesboro firm which ships them to Philadelphia and Balti more. So instead of satisfying the y of Philadelphia lawyers v/ or Baltimore citizens the chickens were brought back to Forest City and Mr. Biddy has been notified to come and get them. Rogers Receives Appointments Hon. Carroll P. Rogers, member of the House of Representatives from Polk county has been ap pointed on four important commit tees, according to announcement b y Speaker D. L. Ward at Ral eigh. The committees are as fol lows: Appropriations, Conserva tion and Development, Game and Corporations. Flower Shop Opens Here On Friday The Tryon Flower Shop, oper ated by Joe Anderson and Mrs. George D. Cooksey, will open on Friday afternoon from 3 to 7 o’clock in the new building next to Mrs. Brownlee’s Style Shoppe. Mr. Anderson stated this morning, “The Tryon Flower Shop will endeavor to render the same service found in any city florist shop. Potted plants, cut flowers and floral de signs will be sold locally and shipped anywhere desired. Prompt delivery service will be maintained for local patrons upon request from the telephone.” An adver tisement in today’s Bulletin in vites the public to visit the shop during opening hours tomorrow afternoon. Wilcox at Rotary Frank S. Wilcox will be in charge of the Tryon Rotary club program on Friday at 1 p. m. at Sunnydale Log Cabin. Doughboys Versus Bush Whackers The fourth battle in the Bowling League tournament will be held tonight in the club rooms between the Doughboys consisting of Bax ter Haynes, F. P. Bacon, Tom Costa, George Comer and James Baker, playing against the Bush Whackers, composed of Charles Nessmith, Dick Taylor, Archie Butler, Walter Honeman and Marion Brock.
