C., MONDAY, FEB. 20, 1939 Rotary Club Endorses Clean-Up Week OThe Rotary club has endorsed the Garden club’s spring clean-up week and has appointed a com mittee composed of F. P. Bacon and J. T. Arledge to cooperate with the Garden club in its project. Batik to Close On Wednesday, 22nd Wednesday. February 22nd, be ing George Washington’s birthday, and a National Holiday, the Tryon Bank & Trust Company, will close for the day according to an an nouncement by Cashier John G. Landrum, Jr. Dr. Preston’s Talk , Attracts Attention /'rfk When Miss Irene Clark, the countv nurse, reported on Friday that Dr. John Z. Preston’s address at the Statewide conference for better care of mothers and babies, held in Raleigh, was so wel’-re ceived that it was highly praised by the conference leaders, her re port sounded more like home town pride. But when a speaker on the American Educational For uni spoke over the radio on an NBC book-up on Saturday at noon and •ouoted extensively from Dr. Pres ton’s paper on rural obstetrical problems, the importance of the paper as a contribution to medical work was evident. Dt. Preston is a graduate of the medical college Continued on back woe . Rogers Helping To Balance Budget Carroll P. Rogers, representative from Polk county to the General Assembly is a member of the im portant sub-committee legislature representing leaders of four com mittees from the Senate and House appropriations and finance com mittees. A picture of the com mittee appeared in Saturday’s Raleigh News and Observer show ing the men behind locked doors at work trying to balance the state budget. This is the first formal joint committee of the senate and house in the history of the state- The committee is authorized to make recommendations for bills and to function as a body to raise revenue. The committee began work on Friday and after adjourn ing for the weekend will convene again this afternoon at 3 o’clock.
