C., MONDAY, OCT. 16, 1939 Hit-Run Victim Still Remains Unconscious f -Tobe Metcalfe, Landrum man who was critically injured late Saturday afternoon when hit by a car on the Asheville-Spartanburg highway near the state line here, remained in an unconscious con dition at St. Luke’s hospital today. According to hospital attaches, little, if any hope is held for the victim’s recovery. He sustained numerous fractures, including a crushed skull and deep lacerations about the face. Sidney Mull, 31-year-old white man of Los Angeles, Calif., and Columbus, surrendered to authori ties here several hours after the accident, admitting being the driver of the car which figured in the mishap. He was turned over to the South Carolina law officials who aided in investigat ing the affair and is being held jin the Greer, S. C., jail pending outcome of Metcalfe’s injuries. Oldest Citizen of Landrum Passes Landrum, Oct. 15.—Harrison D. Culbreth, 91, retired farmer who was Landrum’s oldest citizen, died at his home her e at 10 o’clock this morning following an illness of three weeks. Mr. Culbreth was a native of North Carolina, but for the past 35 years had made his home in Lan drum. He was a member of the First Baptist church of Landrum. Landrum, Oct. 15.—Patricia Pat terson, three-day-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W .C. Patterson of Campobello, died this morning in a Spartanburg hospital. She is survived by her parents and a brother, Kenneth Patterson. Funeral services at 3:30 o’clock Fondav afternoon at the Peniel Baptist church of Polk county, by the Rev. Mr. Early.
