C., SATURDAY, OCT. 14, 1939 Chief Petty Officer Called Back Into Active Service Loyd B. Panther, retired Chief Petty Officer, U. S. N., has been ordered to active duty aboard the destroyer U. S. Kane. Officer Panther served aboard this ship for over eight years prior to his retirement fom active duty in 1930. He entered service in Janu ary 1914 and served through the World War aboard U. S. Battle ship Delaware, with the British Grand Fleet, and did convoy duty during the war. In the Near East in 1921-22 Panther served under Captain Rufus Zogbaum, U. S. N., retired, who is now living in Tryon. Mr. Panther has made his home n this section since retirement, •engaged in various activities. He will renort for duty at Philadel phia on Monday. Mrs. Panther will rema’n at hdme in Lynn, N. C. The Navy Department is calling many of the younger men from retirement, and to active service again. Swannanoa, Oct. 13.—S*wannan oa finally got started in the second period here today and pushed the Tryon-Saluda eleven all over the field to chalk up a 32-0 victory. The home outfit scored once in the second period, and twice in each of the last two quarters. The first three touchdowns resulted from drives with Vick netting one of the scores and Coggins the other two. Then Davidson ran back an intercepted pass to the Tryon 10 and on the next play scored. A pass from J. Penley to Bennett was good for 35 yards and the fifth touchdown.—Asheville Citizen,
