Mr. Burwell was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Wofford College in 1978. He was a member of the Spartanburg County Foundation, has been president of the Salvation Army Board, president of the Spartanburg Kiwanis Club and co-founder of the Spartanburg Mental Health Clinic. He helped establish the Kiwanis Christmas Basket program in Spartanburg. Burwell of San Antonio, Texas and retired Air Force Col. Clyde M. Burwell of Asheville; sisters, Mrs. Lilla Bell Welsh and Mrs. Josephine Shaffner of Charlotte; one grandchild Memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross. J. F.
