The quarterly earnings were the second highest third quarter on record, being exceeded only by earnings of $40,713,000, or $2 63 a share in the 1979 quarter Howard H. Hall. Southern’s president and chief executive officer, pointed out that the 1979 quarter was a particularly robust one for Southern, representing a 73.7 per cent earnings increase vs. the 1978 third quarter, whereas the quarter just ended was marked by recession. "Given those circumstance," he said, “some decline in earnings was to be expected." Earnings for the nine months were the highest on record, exceeding by 7.4 per cent earnings of $127,307,000. or $8.27 a share, in the corresponding period of 1979. Looking ahead, Mr. Hall said that Southern's carloadings in October are again on the rise, and "if this upward trend continues. 1980 will end up as another record year for Southern, exceeding last year’s record earnings of $160,622,000 $10.39a share!."
