Artist Monroe Turner was a Construction Engineer building bridges during his working years. The office of his company, A. M. Turner, Co., were in Chicago and he made his home in Glencoe, a surburb of Chicago While he had little time for painting during these years of bridge building, he did manage to study at the Evanston Academy of Fine Arts. Upon retiring to Tryon he studied under Lou Ingwerson and served as a "Former President of the Tryon Painters and Sculptors." The painting of the “View of Lanier Library" is in pastel and water colors, mediums that usually require a short time to complete a painting. However, the painting of the Library required several months. Due to the orbit of the sun there were only a few hours in the day when the shadows were right-and it had to be a sunny day. He had painted the big tree that stood in the center of the yard into the picture when a storm knocked the tree down. While work crews removed the tree from the Library grounds, Mr Turner painted it out of the painting. The challenges presented to the painter have been met, the painting is finished and ready for viewing. President Knowlton observed, "The painting is an artistic portrayal of the results of the Lanier Library's 90th birthday campaign. The campaign is not completed, is continuing and further support from members and friends of the Library is welcome " The painting will be on display in the Lanier Library. — Reporter 112 B N.
