Cuban refugee camp at Fort
Chaffee. Arkansas Saturday
when one refugee was shot and
about a dozen security officers
were hit with rocks by some 120
refugees who overturned cars
The badly decomposed body of
an Atlanta teen-ager missing
since March 2 was found Sunday
face-down in the South River in
suburban DeKalb County. Joseph
Bell, 15, was the 24th young black
found slain in Atlanta in the past
21 months.
The Polk County
Commissioners will meet today
at 7 p.m. at the Columbus Town
Hall.
The Tryon Kiwanis Club meets
today at 12:45 p.m. at the Pacolet

Howard J. Spika
Resignation Final
President Howard J. Spika of
St Luke's Hospital will resign
July 1 this year, according to
Chairman 0. 0. Paulsell, who
read Mr. Spika's letter ol
resignation at last week's
meeting of the Governing Board.
Mr Paulsell pointed out that
Mr. Spika had been persuaded to
stay on two more years after he
wished to resign in 1979.
‘ There are no words to express
how much Howard Spika has
done for St Luke’s Hospital
during the 15 years he has served
it". Mr. Paulsell said. "He's
entitled to his retirement. We'll
just have to move on from here."

St. Luke’s new Gamma
Camera has come, a diagnostic
tool to be used by all the doctors.
It will do scanning in 10 minutes
of all parts of the body, scanning
which takes more than an hour
with the present worn out
equipment. It will immensely
broaden the services of St. Luke’s
Hospital.
March saw 165 admissions, 1198
days of patient care, and a 52%
occupancy rate. Patients were

Governor’s School
Three Polk Central students
will be attending Governor’s
School this summer The
competition was open only to a
few selected and gifted juniors.
These students then competed
with other students from across
the state for the right to attend
Governor's School in which they
could study in fields ranging from
English, and the Arts to Math and
Science.
Janet Smith
Janet Smith, daughter of Mr
and Mrs. Horace Smith of
Columbus, will be studying
Mathematics at Governor's
School East in Laurinburg, this
summer. Janet is a member of
the Beta Club, Interact Club, and
Vice-President of the Monogram
Club She is also a member of the
track team, volleyball team, and
a varsity cheerleader. After

Fire Damages
McKaig Home
The Tryon Volunteer Fire
Department was called to the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin
McKaig on Rippy Hill Saturday
about 4:30 p.m The fire started
in the basement of the home and
the rest of the house was heavily-
damaged by the smoke and heat.

Roff, 19:16. was first overall and
first in the 13-18 age group;
Alison Meares. 2129, was ninth
