Columbus Starts Work
On Sign Ordinance
Columbus Town Councilman
Dr Thomas V. Bolling Thursday
night continued his efforts to
move the council towards
adoption of a sign ordinance
Since taking his scat on the
board in November. Bolling has
at each meeting raised the
question His efforts Thursday
were rewarded with an
assignment: "You come up with
an ordinance that is acceptable to
business and townspeople."
On a motion made by Council
man Robert E Ormand. Bolling
and Town Administrator Butch
Smith were assigned to a
committee to draft a sign
ordinance for Columbus
Bolling said rather than he and
Smith working alone, he intends
to consult husiness people,
including the members of the
merchant's association.
"Somewhere, somehow, we
have to start saying what we
want in the appearance of the
town.” Bolling said He said he
has reviewed ordinances from
Raeford. Tryon. Biltmore and the
ordinance considered by
Columbus four years ago which
was never acted upon
Ormand, however, expressed
some concern about adoptiong
any ordinance.
"Anytime you read where a
town has adopted a sign
ordinance, you read where
they've had problems,” he said.
Town Attorney Chris Callahan,
who also represents Lake Lure.

Favorable Light
Shed On Columbus
The Columbus Mayor and Town
Council graciously accepted a bit
of praise Thursday night after it
was announced that old-timey
streetlights were going up
"I think the mayor and council
ought to be commended for the
initiative and good judgment
you're showing in taking steps to
show Columbus as the up and
coming place it is." said Ilomar
A. Jones during the public
comment portion of the council
meeting.
Mayor Paul T. Smith suggested
that the town hold a
"lamplighting” party sometime
once the 16 lights are installed
The lights look like antique
gaslights, although they are
electrically powered
In other business:
• The council asked Town
Administrator Butch Smith to
continue to work with the county
to determine the town's role in
the county wide recycling effort
Smith said he anticipates
signing only a three to six month
contract with the county to try
out the program
• The council began
considering building a sidewalk
from the First Baptist Church to
the Food Lion shopping center
Mayor Smith said. “We feel
like it's a needed sidewalk
Something needs to be done in the
near future if it doesn't cost too
much "
The council talked about a
regular sidewalk, versus a more
