The temperature dropped 20
degrees between Friday's high of
86 and Sunday’s high of 66. Low

An American educator held for
three and a half years as a
hostage in Beirut was released
Monday afternoon, according to
CBS News reports. A group
calling itself the Organization of
Islamic Dawn delivered an
announcment Sunday to an
independent Beirut newspaper
saying Frank Reed would soon be
freed.
Reed. 57. of Malden, Mass., is
married to a Syrian Muslim
woman. He was running the
private Lebanese International
School at the time of his
abduction
Damage to the environment of
the Pee Dee River appeared to be
minor after 5.000 to 10.000 gallons
of sulfuric acid were leaked into
the river from a derailed tank

DAR Meeting
The Joseph McDowell Chapter
of the National Society of the
Daughters of the American
Revolution will meet on Friday,
May 11, at, noon at the Lake
Lanier Teahouse, Tryon for their
annual luncheon and installation
of officers for 1990-1992.
There will be reports from the
1990 Continental Congress, as
well as Committee reports; a 50-
year member will be honored.

Bible Conference
Lynn First Baptist Church will
be starting its annual Bible
conference and honoring their
friends on May 6
The activities will start with
the Sunday morning Bible Study
at 9:45 a m At 11 a m Rev. Scott
Alewine of Orangeburg, S.C. will
begin his series of m essages,
“Why Not Just Be Christians."
At this service, there will be a
special recognition of friends that
are visiting the church.
Following the service, there will
be a Friendship Dinner At 1:30
p m Rev Alcwine will be giving
the second message of the Bible
Conference (No evening service).
The conference will continue
Monday through Wednesday at
7:30 pm Rev. Alewine is
formerly from Tryon, having
graduated from Tryon High
and Columbia Bible College and

Pedestrian Killed
On Trade Street
Ellen Miller, 43. of Tryon was
struck by a passing automobile
and killed at 8 p.m Saturday
night on Trade Street across from
Duke Power Co. in Tryon.
Ethel Harris, 81. also of Tryon
was charged with criminal mis
demeanor of causing a death by
vehicle. Tryon Police Chief
Nathan Shields said Harris did
not realize she had hit a person
until later that evening when she
heard people discussing the
accident at the Triangle Stop
Police Officers went there to
interview her Shields said Harris
told police that she knew she had
hit something, but had not
realized it was a person
He said Miller was walking
along with traffic in the street
just as a rainstorm was ending
and darkness was falling.
Miller was transported to
Spartanburg Regional Medical
Center by ambulance and was
pronounced dead there at 10:30
pm
