Vollmer of Tryon discuss the
history of his family at its
meeting Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at
the Stearns Educational Center
auditorium. The public is invited.
The Polk County Board of
Education meets tonight at 6:30
p.m. at the Stearns board room.
The Polk County Board of
Commissioners also meets
tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the
courthouse annex.

Ann Whitmire, candidate for
the Polk County Hoard of
Education, is running unopposed
from Cooper's Gap Township.
Her profile published below
completes a series of profiles of
every candidate for the school
board and the Polk County Board
of Commissioners in the Bulletin
aver the past two weeks. Voters
no to the polls tomorrow..

Whitmire said she would like to
be part of “making a difference
in education" for Polk County.
A retired teacher, Whitmire
has already visited every school
and the Stearns Education
Center, and as a school board
member, she plans to participate
in every school’s functions and be
a school volunteer.
Polk County’s educational
strength is the dedication of its
teachers ana administrators to
implement instructional
programs in the classroom that
enhance learning opportunities,
Whitmire said.
One of the school system’s
weaknesses is low scores on
standardized achievement tests,
she said. Whitmire said these
scores can be improved by
beginning early in the
elementary schools with skills to
develop critical thinking. She
said she also believes
standardized tests should be
given periodically, even in the
high school, so that students have
exposure to this type of testing

Kurkowski announce the
engagement of their daughter,
^Sarah Anne, to Richard L.
Simpson of Rock Hill. S.C.
Miss Kurkowski is a graduate
of E. McMain High School in New
Orleans. La. and earned her
degree in radio/television
broadcasting technology from
Isothermal Community College.
She is currently employed at
WGH Piedmont 8 in High Point,
N.C.
Mr. Simpson, the son of Mr
and Mrs. Harold Simpson of Rock
Hill, S.C., is a graduate of
Northwestern High School in
Rock Hill and earned his degree
in communications from the
University of South Carolina at
Columbia. He is currently
employed at Central Piedmont
Community College and
Cablevision of Charlotte.
A May 25, 1991 wedding is
planned.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo S. Campbell
celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary Nov. 2. They were
honored Nov. 3 with a reception
at Morgan Chapel Baptist Church
Fellowship Hall, hosted by their
son and daughter-in-law. Larry
and Marcelle Campbell, their
grandchildren. Tammy and
Kenneth ('ampbell and friends.

the former Anna Pauline Cooley
of Spartanburg.
Candidates At Rotary
Candidates for the Polk County
Board of Commissioners will
take the podium one more time
today at the Tryon Rotary Club
luncheon at the Vineyard in
Tryon.
The meeting starts at 11:45 and
the forum will begin at 12:45 with
each candidate being given four
minutes to address two questions.
One question asks the candidates
plans for assuring orderly growth
in Polk County, and the other
asks them to describe their vision
for the county and specific plans
to bring it about.

A son was born to Michael and
Lisa Austin of Landrum on Oct.
31 at Park Ridge Hospital.
