A DOCTOR
IN THE
HOUSE
Large Medicare
Population Clouds
Doctors' Finances
Today we present the first in a
four-part series by Claire
Wharton exploring the chal
lenges facing the medical com
munity in the Thermal Belt.
Since spring, two doctors
have left the St. Luke's Hospi
tal's medical staff. For financial
reasons, both moved to areas
with fewer over-65. Medicare
patients.
More area doctors are
expected to retire soon, which
will further thin the ranks.
The Polk County Commission
on Aging recently sounded a
warning call, and urged people
to protest "unfair" Medicare
payments which doctors in this
area must accept.
A key factor for retirees
choosing this area in the first
place is the 74-bed St. Luke's
Hospital and its 21-doctor resi
dent medical staff.
Like the commission, many
area residents are worried that
areas like Polk could face a
medical crisis in the future.
The question is, given the
finances of a heavily Medicare
dependent practice, can the
Thermal Belt continue to
retain and recruit doctors?
