The weather Thursday, high
54, low 34, hunt. 45 percent.
There are a few newsy items
to share today. First, George
Scofield is seeking help in
identifying the student from
Polk County who was in the
first class at the North Carolina
School of the Arts. George is
about to lead a tour of the
school for area students. Call
him if you can help.
Second, a recycling idea:
Reen Smith recently received a
post card made by cutting out
a postcard-sized chunk of the
picture on the front of a cereal
box and writing the card on the
back. Hurry up and cut up your
cereal boxes before someone in
New York gets the idea and
starts selling them to you for SI
each.
Third, join us in wishing
Robert and Iris Dedmondt a
happy 54th wedding anniver
sary. They passed that mile
stone last Friday.
Quote for the day, from
Oscars host Billy Crystal who
looked directly into the camera
last Monday and said, "Didn't
inhale?"
A second, somewhat related,
quote for the day: "Truth is

Rising Ninth Graders
Register This Week
Registration sessions for par
ents of students entering ninth
grade at Polk County High
School next year will take place
twice a day at Polk Central and
Tryon Elementary this week as
follows:
Polk Central: Tuesday, April
7, at 1:20 and 7 p.m.
Tryon Elementary: Thursday,
April 9, at 1:20 and 7 p.m.
A choice of registration ses
sions in either the afternoon or
evening is offered in each of
these schools so that every par
ent whose child will be in ninth
grade at the new high school
will be able to attend.
"I cannot stress enough the
importance of parents coming
to one of these registration ses
sions," said Principal Gerald
Eubanks.
"They will hear about the new
ninth grade curriculum in detail
and will be able to ask ques
tions. We'll be handing out
information about next year's
program which parents will
need to understand in order to
make significant decisions that
will affect their student's future
in high school."
"For this reason," said
Eubanks, "we do not recom
mend that parents bring youn
ger children along. The impor
tance of this occasion requires
the full attention of both next
year's ninth graders and their
parents."
Supt. James Causby will be
present al all four registration

Saluda Students
Qualify For Duke
Talent Program
Two students at Saluda
School have qualified for TIP,
the talent identification program
sponsored since 1980 by Duke
University. They are Jennifer
Wilkie and John Burdett, both
in the seventh grade.
To be eligible for TIP, stu
dents must have scored at the
97th percentile or better on an
in-school achievement or abil
ity measure. Those who qualify
are eligible to take the Scholas
tic Aptitude Test (SAT), a test
normally taken by college-
bound high school juniors and
seniors.
Many seventh graders identi
fied by TIP score as well or
better on the SAT than the
average college-bound senior.
All participants in TIP receive
certificates of merit. Some
become eligible for state-wide

New Columbus
Well On Line
"We really got the water
now," said Columbus Mayor
Paul Smith of the new town
well in The Woods subdivision.
The well has been in use just
over a week.
The new well is definitely an
asset, said Town Administrator
Butch Smith. So far the well
has only had to run three hours
a day, though the town has not
hit the peak season for water
demand yet, Smith said.
Columbus's water source from
the waterfall on White Oak
Mountain will now be the
town's backup water supply, the
mayor said. Columbus no
longer needs to purchase water
from the Town of Tryon, he
added.
"Everyone on Blanton Street
is tickled to death with the
water pressure," manager Smith
said.
