Page 16-The Chronicle, Saturday, July 25, 1981 IHRA World Title Series Set For Farmington Speedway By Ralph Smith Special to the Chronicle Farmington - Winston- Salem’s Van Lyles will be behind the wheel of Deal Buckner’s Camaro, when the International Hot Rod Assn. Winston World Title Series drag racing meet gets underway Saturday and Sunday, July 25-26 at Far mington Dragway, 18 miles west of Winston-Salem. Lyles competes in the super-stock division and in 1979 became the first black drag racing driver to hold the distinction of winning a national drag race event. In that year Lyles, driving a super-stock Chevy owned by .the Lyles and Samuels racing team, captured the super-stock division of the IHRA Winston Northern Nationals at Milan, Mich. When Deal Buckner of Kernersville decided to switch to the modified divi sion and drive a Corvette, he contacted Lyles to take over the driving of the Camaro, Buckner has won a Winston National Cham pionship while driving the Camaro which is a highly regarded race car on the drag circuit. Lyles is well familiar with the Farmington track and is expected to be a strong threat to win in super-stock action. His strongest com petition may be Mike Boyles of King who has captured two national drag racing championships and won two weeks ago in Michigan and this past week was runner up at Lex ington, Ky. The World Title Series at Farmington will have the powerful pro-stock class racers in the line-up for the first time in a title meet race there. This will include the “Boss” Mustangs of such well known drivers as veteran Ronnie Sox, Ricky Smith and Harold Denton. Smith, of King, has been leading in the IHRA Winston points all season, but Warren Johnson of Friedly, Minn, is hot on his trail winning out over Smith in Michigan. Johnson will have his “hot” Monte Carlo on the line in the Far mington race. Ronnie has been a veteran Dodge and Plymouth driver for almost two decades of racing but this season switched to the Mustang and has been bur ning up the track with it. Smith and Sox are both members of the Holly Seven Club which is reserved for drivers who have taken their dragsters down a one- quarter mile dragstrip in less than eight seconds. Smith was the first to break into the club with Sox com ing in later. The club is sponsored by Holley Car buretor Corp. and at pre sent has only four drag rac ing drivers nationwide who have made it to the coveted group. Harvey Returns Vionshi Hayes Names Assistants By Robert Eller Sports Editor WSSU football coach Bill Hayes filled the two vacan cies on his football staff last week by announcing that former Ram player and coach Alfred Harvey and former UNC assistant Steve Komondorea would suc ceed Thomas Saxon and Charles Bailey who left the school after last season. Harvey, a graduate of Winston-Salem State where he was a star linebacker under the late Cleo Wallace, returns to the school after a one year stint at South Stokes Senior High where he served as the offensive coordinator for that school’s football team, and as assistant track and field coach. The 1975 WSSU grad had served as assistant football coach, academic advisor and women’s basketball coach at the institution from 1978-80. Prior to com ing to his alma mater, he was athletic director, head football coach, head basketball coach and chair man of the Physical Educa tion Department at Gum berry High from 1975-78. “It is great to come back home,” said a smiling Harvey at the press con ference called to announce the appointments and kickoff the athletic ticket sales drive. “Although 1 have been away the past year, I have never really left, my heart has always been here at WSSU and it is an honor to come back and work with people of the caliber of coach Hayes and coach Gaines.” Harvey will serve as the offensive coordinator and work with the offensive backs and receivers. “Alfred will be our offen sive coach,” said Hayes, “It is good to have him back and we are looking forward to the season.” Harvey replaces Thomas Saxon who left to take a similar post at his alma mater South Carolina State. Hayes also introduced Steve Komondrea who will replace Charles Bailey as the team’s defensive line coach. Bailey accepted a job as a pro scOut after weighing a number of of fers that included the head football coaching job at Fayetteville State. Komondorea, a 1973 graduate of Wake Forest where he played on the line, comes to the school after serving as an assistant at the University of North Carolina the past two seasons where he helped coach Dick Crum build one of the top defensive units in college football. Prior to working at UNC, he was an assistant at Reidsville Senior High from 1977-79 where he worked with the defensive line, and offen sive tight ends and tackles. From 1973 to 76, Komon dorea worked at Cummings Senior High where he serv ed as head tennis coach, in Morgan Gets New Coach Tom Morris, a former assistant at Morgan State, will return as head coach this season. He replaces Clarence Thomas, who re signed last November after compiling a 17-15-1 record for three seasons. Morgan won’t be working under the best of conditions at Mor gan State, and he knows it. “A strong thing in Morris’ favor is that he has been at Morgan State before,” said Morgan State athletic di rector Earl Banks, “He knows our problems, most ly financial, like limited supplies, equipment and staff. ’ ’ It was those financial problems that led to Tho- Tom Morris mas’ quitting. MSU’s pro gram is in bad shape. “We didn’t even have spring practice,” Banks said. “Obviously, very little re cruiting was done. No ques tion about it. Tom has his work cut out for him.” The Pilgrims originally intended to settle in what is now New Jersey, addition to his duties as an assistant in football. “Steve came out and helped us in spring practice with X’s and O’s and he really impressed me. Hav ing worked with one of the best defenses in football the past two years is certainly a- high recommendation of his talents,” said Hayes. “I am pleased to accept this challenge and feel this is a great opportunity for me. 1 am really looking for ward to this season,” stated Komondorea. The Rams open their 1981 season on their arch rivals the North Carolina A&T Aggies in that team’s new stadium on September 12. The Aggies posted a 9-1 record last year including a win over WSSU.
