Page 14-The Chronicle, Thursday, November 12, 1981 r ASK BARRY dy Barry Cooper Rivalry May Renew Between FAMU-TSU Q. / understand the Florida A&M-Tennessee State football series may resume. Have you heard anything?-Sheila Davis, Miami, Fla. A. As a matter-of-fact, 1 have heard something on the matter. The latest word is that Tennessee State athletic director Samuel Whitman plans to write a letter to Florida A&M athletic director Roosevelt Wilson, re questing that the series be resumed next season. After a two-year layoff, FAMU is said to be interested in renew ing the series. It looks as if the teams will meet next season, or in 1983 at the latest. Q. Can you tell me if Deacon Jones is coaching in the National Football League?-Michael Haynes, Baltimore, Md. A. No, Jones isn’t coaching. Fie is a vice president with a marketing firm in Southern California, and also does some public relations work with Miller Brewing Com pany. He told me a few years ago in Miami that he is in terested in coaching, “but only as a head coach.” He quickly added, “and they’re (the NFL) not ready for me yet.” Q. Can a team kick an o ns ides kick after a safety?-Herman Simpson, Miami, Fla. A. Yes. The Miami Dolphins even tried it successfully last year in an NFL game. The rule simply states that a team, after having been trapped for a safety can kick off or punt to the opposing team. On a kickoff, the ball is a free ball once it travels 10 yards. Q. Any chance AH and Frazier might fight each other after they make their comeback?-Louis James, Austin, Tex. 1 A. I sure hope not. Seriously, however, there has been no talk of an Ali-Frazier IV. Let’s hope that no talk sur faces. It’s better to remember Ali and Frazier as they were, back when they had all of their skills and were in their prime. (Got a sports question? By Robert Eller Sports Editor The Winston-Salem Smokers wheelchair basket ball team will open their home season this Saturday afternoon at Sprague Street Recreation Center when they lake on the Fayetteville Wheeltrot Iers in a doublehcadcr. Game times are I and 3 p.m. The Smokers, who open ed the season with two lop sided wins over the Whccitrotlers in Fayet teville hope to rebound from a disappointing show ing in the Triad Shootout Invitational Tourney played in Lexington last weekend. In that tourney, the Smokers, who entered the season ranked 14th in the nation, dropped con secutive games to the 5th ranked Tampa Bay Sun- coasters, 2()lh ranked Birm ingham Chariots and 12th ranked Washington UFO’s. Tampa stopped the Smokers 53-45 after leading by only one point with three minutes left. Birmingham also u.sed a late second half surge also in beating the Smokers 55-48. Washington, which upset Tampa Bay for the title, looked as if they would blow the Smokers off the floor as they rolled to a 34-17 half time lead. The Smokers came back in the second half, however, behind the scoring of Elmer Clayton and Otis Thomp son. Clayton scored 12 of his 16 points in the fitial 20 minutes whlc Fhompson scored all but two of his 12 points after intermission fettling a comeback which saw the Smokers actually take a 41-40 lead with two minutes left before Bill Ar- dinger, who led the UFO at tack with 18 points and John Pinckney who scored 13 put the game away with baskets after Bill Dcnby had scored to give the UFO’s the lead. Coach Robert Eller was not happy with the play of his team in the tourney. “We really never got into our game. We made too many turnovers in all three games and we never really ran our offen.se until the last half of the UFO game. If it hadn’t beeti for our defense, we would have got ten blow'll out of every game.” Eller said the three losses would probably drop the Smokers from the nation’s top 20 but added that it might be a good thing. “Ever since we came back from Nashville last year and found out we were ranked we have gotten cocky, some of our players have gotten away from the teatn con cept and stopped doing the things we did to get where we were. Now we know we have to go back to our game, put our nose to the grinding stone and work. 1 was encouraged by the way we catne back agaitist Washington. That showed we have character. We are a little behind the other teatns tiow as far as our prepara tion goes but we will be ready when post season play comes aroutid. I guaratitec we w'ill play bet ter team ball this weekend.” Coach Bighouse Gaines Red-White Game Ineonelusive By Robert Eller Sports Editor WSSU Basketball coach “Bighouse” Gaines watch ed the annual Red and White intrasquad game with interest Sunday after noon at the Gaines complex but came away without drawing any conclusions about his players so early into training. “All 1 can say is that it looked as if the two teams were pretty evenly match ed. From watching the game it looks as if we will have more depth and that all of our big kids can play, but you can't tell much from an intrasquad game. I’ll know more about the team after we have a few scrimmages,” said Gaines who hit the recruiting trail hard after last years dis appointing season and came away with a number of fine prospects, at least on paper. In the contest the Red team coached by Bill English defeated the White team under Tim Grant 68-66. Therman Greene, the Rams leading scorer with a 17,2 average last year. paced the Red team with 14 points hitting 7 of 9 floor shots. Kevin McCray, who netted 15.1 points per game last year, added 12 points. But the biggest surprise for the Reds was 6-6 freshman Kevin Vaughn. The Phila delphia product scored 13 points hitting 5 of 9 floor shots and added 6 rebounds matching the total of team mate Roger Mason, a start er last year. Three other freshmen con tributed to the win. Eugene Pennick, a 6-6 fresh man from Lynchburg, Va. hit on all four of his floor shots and had 6 rebounds, while 6-7 freshman Tim Harvey out of Rochester, N.Y. had 9 points and five rebounds, Ron Johnson, a 6-1 guard who also hails from Phila delphia scored six point. For the Whites who led 34-28 at the half, Tyrone Grandberry had 15 points, hitting 7 of 11 from the field. He also added 5 rebounds and four assists. 6-4 James Mitchell, a start er last year before injuring a knee, followed Grand berry with 12 points and led all rebounders with 7. Veteran Danny Womack had 8 points as did 6-7 freshman Doug Hobson of Willingboro, N.J.. John Watkins, a junior college transfer at 6-3 had 6 points as did freshman quard Frank Henderson of Charlotte. Quincey pair had five re bounds but was only 1 of 9 from the field, pair is a 6-7 freshman from Hampton, Va. The Rams who open their season on December 1 against arch rival North Carolina A&T, at team that played in the NIT last year, have but two seniors on the team. Green and Grand berry. They have two juniors, three sophomores and a host of freshmen prospects. Among the large crop of freshmen are five players who are better. 6-6 or llllilllnillllllllllllllllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiililliiiii Wrestlers From Page 13 iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiii Greensboro.
