Bl^ck College Sports After watching his team win its first game of the season, a 21-17 win over North Carolina A&T, Delaware State Coach Joe Purzycki said, “I’m the happiest 1-6 coach in the country. 1 really feel like we’re getting somewhere.’’ Purzycki is the only white head coach at a predominantly black school. Without question, he is on the verge of turning around the Hornets’ program. Delaware State won only one game all of last season. The Hornets managed to beat the slumping A&T Aggies by scoring two touchdowns during the final two minutes of play. Black college basketball teams are in full swing by now. Most opened practice on Oct. 15. Alcorn State Coach Dave “Whiz” Whitney put his club through a strenuous workout. ‘That was probably the hardest opening day practice ever had,” Whitney said recently. “But the squad is in real good shape and we’re pleased with the way things went. We have a bunch of people who are ag gressive.” As usual, Alcorn is picked to have one of the best teams in black college basketball. “We have a lot of of fense,” Whitney said, “but we must be able to balance it with good defense. The keys to our season will be the development of a center and how well we play defense.” The Braves’ top returnee from last year’s 17-12 team is All-Southwestern Athletic Conference forward Albert Ir- -ing, a 6-foot-7 senior. Irving, considered a pro prospect, iveraged 17.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game last 'ear. . No matter what, Jackson State just can’t seem to beat Jrambling. J-State lost to Grambling again recently, naking it the sixth straight time that Grambling has won he key matchup. Grambling’s win means the Tigers should now breeze |o another SWAG title in football. Among those at the Grambling-Jackson State game lere reporters from Sports Illustrated, as well as cpresentatives from Black Entertainment Television, ihich carried the game nationwide on a delayed basis. Tennessee State coach John Merritt continues to suffer tom high blood pressure and an irregular heart beat fter being released from a Nashville hospital. He’s ex erted to give up coaching after this season. Speaking of Sports, Illustrated, Johnson C. Smith was lentioned in the magazine recently, but not in a positive -ay. After JCS lost 82-0 to South Carolina State, Sports jlustrated, wrote that the defeat was “one of the worst lit and run cases ever in the South.” The 82-0 shellacking was JCS’ worst loss ever. Prairie View, Bethune-Cookman and Kentucky State ill join host Florida A&M in a Capital City Basketball lassie to be played in Tallahassee, Fla., Dec. 11-12. The city of Tallahassee is trying to lure the 1983 Mid- jastern Athletic Conference basketball tournament, and lay get it. Reclassified Tennessee State, has ten reclassified by the ICAA from Division I-A to (vision I-AA. That’s the lad news, since the Blue kers had hoped to remain I I-A along with the Notre mes and Southern Cali- nia. Ipwever, Tennessee State led to make the I-A quirements, such as leduling enough I-A op- nents, and the NCAA sntly knocked the Blue ;ers into I-AA, along ih teams such as Grambl ing and Jackson State. The good news is that the Blue Tigers are eligible for the I-AA playoffs. The way it looks now, Grambling, Jackson State, South Carol- State are the four black college teams with the best chance of making it ot the I-AA playoffs. Grambling and S. C. State favored to win their conference championships, are virtual shoo-ins for the playoffs. Jackson State and Tennessee State also have a shot at at-large berths. Winston-Salem State’s dreams of a spot in the CIAA championship game came to a halt this past weekend when they drop ped a 27-20 decision to the tough Vikings of Elizabeth City. That loss coupled with a win over JC Smith by the Eagles of North Carolina Central knocked the Rams out of the game which now feature the Eagles against the unbeaten Panthers of Virginia Union in Charlotte on November 21. Still WSSU head coach Bill Hayes is hard at work preparing his young troops for their final game of the season this Saturday against the defending NAIA National Champs. The game, while not having a bearing on the Rams conference record, will be a great significance to the team according to Hayes. “We really want this game for a number of reasons. First if we win we will have a winning season and imporve on last years 5-5 record. Second it will give us incentive to go out and work hard on our weight program in the off season. Third it will give us a shot in the arm as we go out recruiting and last but not least we have never beaten Elon. The Fighting Christians entered the season as the number one ranked team in the NAIA poll. They walked through their first five ever. They are ranked in the top five in the nation in both pass and rushing de fense. The contest marked the end of the football careers at WSSU for five Rams. All-American linebacker Carlton “Smiley” Watson, the teams leader in tackles, will be making his final apperance as will split end Sidney Wilkins who had the best game of this career last week catching 6 passes for 153 yards with touch downs of 48 and 32 yards. Steady center Barry Trayn- ham also will be ending his career along with left guard John Lewis. Punter Pierre Townsend, among the league leaders for the past two seasons, will also be saying farewell. games before being upset by Catawba and were also tied by Norfolk State. Elon still has slim hopes of getting into the NAIA play offs but a loss to the Rams would kill those hopes. A win on the other hand by the Rams would help the chances of Elizabeth City which has only one loss this season at the hands of Virginia Union which is almost a shoein to get invited to the NCAA divi sion II playoffs. Elon is led by quarterback John Bangley, The transfer from Virginia Tech is a fine passer and an excellent runner. He is considered by many as a pro quarterback prospect. The Christians strength lies in their defense how- Haward Soccer Playoff Hopes Dim Howard’s chances of making the NCAA soccer playoffs this season all but went out the window with last Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Alderson-Broaddus. The loss marked the Bison’s second in their last three contest and • dropped Howard to 7-3-2. “Our fate is very much in someone else’s hands,” said head coach Keith Tucker, referring to his team’s playoff chances. “I don’t think winning the last two games will help.” Howard started the season strongly, winning its first six contests. However, in juries plus the lack of a strong scorer have plagued the Bison in their, last five outings. If you still want a boat and feel that most rigs are too expensive, try shopping for a smaller boat, a one- man affair, and match it up with a 5 to 10 horsepower outboard motor. With such equipment, 1 advise staying on small impounded waters, just to be safe in case of a storm. It takes a fast boat to get you in to dock when a storm is brew ing. Some small boats may be transported on top of the car and the motor can be carried in the trunk. Small investment, economical to operate.
