January 2, 1986 Page B1 Prep Spotlight Howard s By DAVID BULLA Chronicle Sports Editor i O Howagd~~46> ~4h? best basketball player to come from these parts in a long time. ^ So talented is the 6-foot-7 \ Howard that he's rated one of the ) 100 best prep players in the land by both The Sporting News and Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook. Watching the North senior play won't deny this. He's proficient in each aspect of the game and plays unselfishly. Thus, it's -> entirety understandable why college assistants have been tailing him since he was a ninth-grader at Carver. Yet, there's that one gnawing suspicion: Why aren't his statistics more glowing? Last season, he averaged 14.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists while shooting 61 percent from the floor. Those numbers show above-average balance in a young player's game, but aren't quite what you'd expect from a bluechipper. Howard, bound for North ^ It ^ A ^arouna state, says ne preiers to share the statistical glory. He'll be ready for a big statistical night - when you really need it. Last Saturday night in the championship game of the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic at Memorial Coliseum, the defending champion Vikings needed Howard badly. He responded with a blue-chip, 36-point effort, perhaps the best of his high school career. Unfortunately# North Surry Itill claimed A 39-38 victory, ending the Vikings' 32-game regular-season winning streak and dropping North to 9-1 in 1985-86. Howard, who took a 15.1 scoring average into the tournament, made 15 of 21 field goals and six of seven free throws. He was all over the floor with three steals, two rejections and twp assists. Howard Dlaved a wins oosition in North's 1-3-1 defense. That required him to try to stymie North Surry's outside shooting triumvirate of Chad Gough, Kemp Phillips and Zane Atkins. Shying away from Howard, they combined to account for 47 of the Greyhounds' points. Once a shot was taken, Howard had to race in and block out for one of his 11 rebounds. "If it hadn't been for Brian Howard, we would have had about six or eight points in the first half." North Coach Olon Shuler said .""He played super.""
