Associated Press Laser Photo 'Family Pictures' album display at SECCA The "Family Pictures" of pho tographer Sally Mann will be on view at SECCA in Gallery A from SepL 9 to Nov. 6. The 23 photographs in the exhibition are of Ms. Mann's chil dren, a boy, a girl and a new baby. The Village Voice, commenting on Ms. Mann's photogr^hs, wrote "...for the most unsettling and arresting photos around go see Sally Mann's family pictures. Man n's subjects are her small children... Often shot when they’re sick or hurt or just naked. Nosebleeds, cuts, hives, chicken pox, swollen eyes, vomiting - the usual trials of child hood " can be alarmingly beautiful. thrilling, sensual moments in Man n's portrait album.” Ms. Mann observed, "This series is made in an attempt to deal with my often contradictory, occa sionally ambivalent feelings about motherhood." Ms. Mann received a Guggen heim Foundation grant in 1987, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1982 and a Virginia Museum Professional Fellowship in 1982. "Ready-Mades," an exhibition highlighting everyday "found" objects will be on view at SECCA from SepL 16 to Nov. 13 in Gallery B. Ramsey Lewis will be featured performer at Streetscene preview Carolina Streetscene headline entertainer Ramsey Lewis will be featured at the Preview Party in the parking lot of the Stouffer Winston Plaza Hotel Friday, Sept. 9. In addition to the Ramsey Lewis Trio, the party will fealure music by The East Coast Rivieras, an "all you can eat" buffeL free beer and door prizes. Streetscene mug, which can be pur chased for $12.99 from the Arts Council, 305 W. Fourth St., or for $15 at the door the evening of the party. The party begins at 5 p.m. Admission is by special edition The 1988 Artscene section of the 13th annual Carolina Streetscene will award $3,600 in prize money, a $500 cash award, 10 cash awards for excellence of $300 each and a $100 award for best booth design display. Artscene, the juried art and crafts section of the festival, will feature the work of 60 artists and craftsmen from nine Southeastern states. This is the fourth year that cash awards have been available. In addition to Artscene, the Markeiscene and Folkscene areas offer local artists and craftsmen an opportunity to display and sell art and craft items. Kidscene, the children’s activi ty area of Streetscene, is coordinat ed this year by the Sawtooth Center for Visual Design. Kidscene will be located in Wayne Corpening Park during festival hours Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. The highlight of this year’s Kidscene will be a special perfor mance by Tom Chapin, who has made numerous children's albums, including the popular, "Cabbage Patch Dreams." Shoe- mate has been awarded a Meritori ous Mast while serving at Marine Air Station, in Tustin, Calif. A Meritorious Mast is an offi cial recognition from a marine's commanding officer for superior individual performance. It is issued in the form of a bulletin published throughout the command, and a copy is entered in the marine's per manent service records. A 1976 graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, she joined the Marine Corps in December 1980. She is the daughter of Edna M. Nelson of Winston-Sdem. Marine Lance Cpl. Vincent K. Bates recently reported for duty with 2nd Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point. A 1985 graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, he joined the Marine Corps in April 1986. Bates is the son of Patricia Lewis of Winston-Salem. Navy Seaman Recruit Franklin D. Butler has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, Ill. During Butler's eight-week training cycle, he studied general military subjects designed to pre pare him for further academic and on-the-job training. His studies included seaman ship, close order drill, naval history and first aid. A 1986 graduate of Parkland High School, he joined the Navy in April 1988.
