ME AC SPRING SPORTS Florida A&M won conference titles In men's and women's outdoor track, men's and women's tennis and baseball to complete their domination of the MEAC Spring CSiampkxiflfaips held last month at Tallahas see, Fla. Here's a recap of the action for each sport BASEBALL The Rattlers delivered the knockout punch in the championship game, dropping Delaware State 1 1-0 in the process. In the title game, A&Nfs starting pitcher Malcolm Hamilton went five innings, allow ing only two hits and two walks, while strik ing out four batters. David Freeman recorded the save. Rattlers second baseman Adrian West turned three double plays, scored two runs and hit a triple in the championship tilt He was involved in nine double plays during the four game stretch and was voted tournament MVP. Joseph Durant won the outstanding coach award. FAMU swept the double elimination tournament with four wins and no losses. Coach Durant's team finished the year at 29 17. The Rattlers won two close games against South Carolina State and Delaware State by identical scores of 3-2. They earned a berth in the finals by topping North Caroli na A&T, 10-6. The title victory was A&M's second straight and the fourth in five years. The Hornets (25-12 for the season) made their , third appearance in the finals over the last four years. They won the title in '89, but have lost to the Rattlers twice in the finals. Del State got off to a roaring start when they stomped Copptn State, 23-3. But in the next round, they were bounced to the loser's bracket with a one-run loss to A&M. The Hornets battled their way back to the final round with wins over Coppin (12-7) and North Carolina A&T (14-7). MEN S TRACK . The Rattlers outpointed defending champion South Carolina State 131-92 &> capture the team title. A&Nfs David Stargell was named the meet's outstanding performer after winning the long jump (24-9), triple jionp (49-10 3/4) and turning the lead leg on the Rattler's victorious 4 x 400 relay team who won with a time of 3: 1 1 3. Bobby Lang, FAMU coach, claimed his fifth MEACs men's outdoor championship and his third women's title. He was named the meet's outstanding coach for men and women. WOMEN'S TRACK Florida A&M rolled up 151 points to unseat defending champion Morgan Stat6 and win the title going away. Second-place Maryland-Eastern Shore was far off the the Lady Rattlers' pace with 110 points. Individually, FAMLTs Kanyon Singie ^tary won the 100 (11.94) and 200 (23.9) sprints en route to being named the meet's outstanding female performer. Singletary also tallied points by placing third in the javelin, fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus, giving her 32 individual points. The only new MEAC outdoor record was set m the women's division thanks to Maryland-Eastern Shore's Michelle Nurse. Nurse clocked a 1:00.66 in the 400-mterme diare hurdles, breaking the previous mark of 1.-01.17 set by Howard's Lorraine Brown in ?82. MEN'S TENNIS The Rattlers proved they were indeed kings of the court when they won four of six singles matches in the finals and two of the three doubles matches to garner 31 team points to win the championship. Howard, who had won four straight MEAC tennis tides, finished second with 23 points. Morgan State's Jermaine Thomas walked off with the most outstanding per former award and Florida A&M*s Robert Mungen was voted the outstanding coach for the tournament Here are the results from men's tourna ment. WOMEN 'S TENNIS The Rattlers completed their tennis sweep as the women edged Howard's Lady Bison, 19-18 in the team standings. Howard entered the tournament as tlje two-time con ference champions. $?
