Getting back_on track Union Bethel A.M.E. starts anew with new pastor By YVETTE N. FREEMAN Community News Editor The Rev. Andrew Holman Sr. recently joined Union Bethel A.M.E. Church, 1617 Trade Street, as its new pastor. Holman, who first took over his duties as pastor about a month ago, resides in Wilming ton, North Carolina and will be commuting to Winston-Salem. He was previously the pastor of St. James A.M.E. Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. Holman was assigned to Union Bethel because of what _ he said were membership prob- ^ lems. "Wherever they (church officials) find something that needs to be done, they send me there," he stated. In the month that he has been at the Union Bethel, Hol man has made a difference by reorganizing the congregation and setting up a variety of pro grams. He says things are once again on track for the church and its members. In addition to celebrating his new position as pastor of Union Bethel, Holman also recently celebrated his 68th pas toral anniversary with members of the church in a special ser vice held Sunday, November 24. Holman said that it really doesn't feel as if 68 years has egone by since he first entered the ministry in 1924. "It's just a ^little time past, that's all," he said. Holman, however, added that it wasn't his decision to go into the ministry, but rather Gregory Dowd and Mrs. Esther Mae Thompson ? 1 ' ? t > vy y ji ?I M IwoifAnoipnnf. v^B^v. ^ tf'lfM* -JL - '4 Mr. and Mrs. Galilee Missionary crowned Mrs. Esther Mae Thompson and Gregory Dowd were crowned Mr. and Mrs. Galilee Missionary Baptist Church at the culminating service for Men's and Women's Day 1991. Mrs. Thompson is a member of the Sunday School, Missionary Circle, and Spiritual Choir. Mr. Dowd sings on the Male Chorus and Gospel Choir and is an assis tant Sunday School teacher. Other captains vying for the title included: Clarence Gilliam, Don nell Gantt, Beatrice Caldwell, Emma Cash, Shirley Gore, and Gloria Morgan. Dr. W. C. Hay is the pastor of Galilee Church. Christmas Cantata at Hanes The Chancel Choir of Hanes Memorial C.M.E. Church, will present its annual Christmas Can tata, "The Qreatest Gift," by H. W. Petri and R. Bronner, Sunday, Dec. 15 at 5 p.m. in the sanctuary of the church. Directed by James D. Smith, also church organist, the soloists for this year's presen tation are the Rev. Baibara Land ingham, soprano; Peggy W. McLaughlin, coordinator, Frank E. McKissick, tenor and John S. Hampton Sr., baritone. The Rev. Landingham is a native of Winston-Salem, and is a former member of Hanes Memo rial Church, where she sang in the Chancel Choir. She is a graduate of the local school system and attended Hood Theological Semi nary in Continuing Education for three-and-half years. Presently, she is pastor of Mt Zion C.M.E. Church in Galax, Va., and Mt. Calvary C.M.E. Church in Mount Airy. She is married to Herbert Landingham and is the itiother of two children. Presently, she is employed with the Winston Saleim Housing Authority. Peggy Waddell McLaughlin is a native of Spindale. She is a retired teacher in the Winston Salem/Forsyth Co. School Sys tem. Presently, she teaches at Glenn High School and is a tutor of mathematics with the NAACP Learning Center with private stu dents. At Hanes Memorial C.M.E. Church, she is the church pianist; member of the. Chancel Choir; director of the Inspira tional Chorus; member of Shanta Malia Choral Ensemble and H.M.C. Chorale. She is member of A&T Alumni Associatioa She loves all types of music and enjoys sports, especially bowling. She is tb? mother of four children ,and the grandmother of four, (t McKissick is owner of FM Enterprises and is a native of Winston-Salem. He is a graduate of the local school system and received his A.A.S. in Business Administration. He is a member of the Shanta-Malia Choral Ensemble and Christian Meth odist Men's Chorus. He is chair person of Steward Board No. IV. John Singletary Hampton, a native of Winston-Salem, attend ed the public schools of the city. He is a graduate of N.C. A&T University with a degree in Busi- . ness Administration. He was director of the Chancel Choir from 1947 until 1984. He is now president of the choir. He has done solo work for the Chancel ^Choir's "The Greatest Gift" and 'The Seven Last Words." He is a member of several singing groups, namely, Shanta-Malia Choral Ensemble, Christian Methodist Men's Chorus of Hanes Memorial C.M.E. Church and the Twin City Choristers of Winston-Salem. He is the father of one son, Nathan S. Hampton of Winston-Salem and is retired from Burlington Industries, Inc. of Greensboro. Divine intervention. "I was called into it. Nothing made me do it. 1 was just called into it. It was a thing that happened that let me know that God was speaking to me/' he said. He explained that before entering the ministry, his family told him that he would preach was then that he knew the min istry was his calling."It's the Man that sent me, that's leading and guiding me," he said. Since becoming a minister, Holman has worked at several churches in North and South Carolina, including Rock Hill Mission Church, Thomas "Wherever they (church offi cials) find something that needs to be done, they send me there." - The Rev. Andrew Holman Sr. in his sleep at night. "I couldn't stop. Every night I would get up and walk the floor preaching sermons. My mother would wake me up and put me back to bed, and I'd get right up and do the same thing over," he recalled. Holman also said that after his first church sermon, an elderly man who had previously required the use of crutches to walk, walked up the aisle with out any assistance or his crutch es, to the podium, and embracecLHolman. He said h Chapel, Stovers Chapel, and Shady Grove, all in South Car olina; as well,as churches in Hillsboro and Asheville, North Carolina. ^Although Holman has now reached that time when most ministers would consider retir ing, he says he has no plans to do so any time soon. . He said, "I'm not planning to retire until I find that I can't make it any further. And the way I feel now, 1 don't have any idea in my mind that it'll be soon." The Rev.
