The Les Bonne Filles (The Good Girls) Club held its Golden Year Celebration at its annual Christmas Party last Saturday night at the Holiday Inn-North. Club members in attendance were decked out in gold or gold trimmed dresses in keeping with the spirit of the occasion. The theme for the cele bration was "Walking Back Through Fifty Years of Service." The speaker for the evening was Dr. Manderline P. Scales, an honorary member of the Club and a daughter of one of the charter membersLof the Club. The Club was founded in November of 1941 and named "Les Bonne Filles" - "The Good Girls" at the suggestion of the late Rev. William Phillips. Three of the char ter of members, Roxanna W. Pitts, Maggie B. McCorkle, and Rosie Steen Feemster, have been active with the Club through the years and they were present at the 50-YSar Celebration. i Dr. Scales gave a scholarly account, mixed with amusing inci dents, of the fifty years of the Club's existence, citing its high member ship standards, lofty goals, contribu tions through the years to numerous charitable organizations, the furnish ing of a room at the Reynolds Memorial Hospital, out-of-town trips, worshiping at various church es, and of the outstanding communi ty leaders the Club had presented to speak as it entertained friends and guests at annual Christmas parties. Doris Montgomery served as Mistress of Ceremonies. Gwendolyn Stewart, a guest, furnished music and accompanied the Club and guests in the singins of Joy to the World. Helen Scott brought greet ings and Ethel Brooks gave the opening prayer. Following a musical salute to Senior Members of the Club, Bishop O. D. Legrant gave the ?l&ace: ^ ~ ? *' After dinner, Doretha Shannon rendered a solo accompanied by Peggy Moore. Following the solo, Linda Jordan introduced the speaker of the evening, Dr. Manderline Scales, Assistant Chancellor for Stu dent Affairs and-Professor of Span ish at Winston-Salem State Univer sity. Dr. Scales spoke on the theme "Walking Back Through Fifty Years of Service*" Each member of the Club was introduced by Ethel Black. The members in turn introduced their guests. Rosie S. Feemster, president of the club, presented a plaque to Linda Jordan ${io was named Miss Congeniality, made remarks and gave a gift to each member of the Club. She concluded by saying that it can be truthfully said that through out its history, "The Good Girls," have been good to God, our church es, and our community. The celebration was ended with Club' members exchanging gifts. / Fire Chief announces promotions in Dept. Fire Chief Pete Harless announced on Wednesday, Nov. 27, the promotions of Kenneth M. Brown, Ray D. Miller, and Sandy L. Shepherd. Brown assumes new duties as assistant fire marshal and is assigned to the Winston-Salem Fire Prevention Bureau. He joined the fire department in 1985 as a fire fighter. He earned his bachelor's degree from Virginia State Univer sity in business administration. Some of his new duties are fire investigation and code enforcement. Miller has been promoted from fire engineer to platoon supervisor and will assume his new duties at Fire Station No. 9. A graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, he has an associate's degree in fire science technology from Rowan Technical Institute and is a state certified instructor. He began work with the department in 1983. Shepherd's promotion is from I Kenneth M. Brown firefighter to fire engineer. His assignment is to Fire Station No. 5. He graduated from East Forsyth High School and has a bachelor's degree in biology from the Univer sity of North Carolina-Charlotte. He joined the department in 1988. JOY. PEACE. LOVE. FRIENDSHIP.
