Russell's Funeral Home 822 Carl Russell Ave. 722-3459 BUTLER Mrs. Carrie Harris Butler of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, October 27, 1992 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was bom October 16, 1930 in Winnsboro, South Carolina to the late Wade Robinson and Melessia Nelson. She was the wife of the late James Davis Butler. She was a member of Heavenview Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church and was an employee of the B & J Beauty Shop as a beautician on Liberty Street. She is survived by two daughters, Gloria (Lewis) Thomas of the home and Glenda (Wilbert) Blandon of Fayetteville; three brothers, Willie (Gwendolyn) Robinson of Winston Salem, Richard (Marie) Robinson of Bladen County, and James (Rosie Mae) Robinson of Winnsboro, S.C.; four grand children, James, LaShanda, LaThasha and Antwon Thomas, all of the home; one aunt, Pinkie Baldwin of Southern Pines; one uncle, Will W. Davis of Winston-Salem; three sisters-in-law, Loree (William Mack) Jackson and Esther Butler of Winston Salem, and Sarah Henderson of Greensboro; a devoted friend, John Duncan of Winston-Salem; plus many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, November 1 at 2 p.m. at Heavenview Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church, with the Rev. Mark Foster officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Directors handled the funeral arrangements. FLOWERS Mrs. Geneva Flowers of Winston-Salem died Monday, October 26, 1992 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She was born April 24, 1918 in Wadesboro to the late Payton and Luza lia Myers. J She is survived by a devoted friend, Sylvester Reid; four sons, Henry Carter, Bobby Myers and Alfred Flowers, all of Winston-Salem, and Thomas Barnes of Durham; a daughter, Carolyn Nickens of Mesas Ariz.; three step-daughters, Frankie Morant, Jackie Archie of Winston-Salem, and Kay Freemand of Bronx, N.Y.; four sisters, Betty Blakney of Winston- Salem, Elizabeth McMillan and Cora Williams of Durham, and Lizzie Mae Pegues of Camden, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; four daughters-in-law; four sons-in-law; plus many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Friday, October 30 at 2 p.m. in the Russell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Lenton Rhodes officiating. Burial followed at the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. Russell Funeral Directors handled the funeral arrangements. LITTLE Mr. Paul Parson Little of Winston-Salem died Sunday, October 25, 1992 at his home, following an extended period of illness. He was born July 4, 1915 and had lived in Winston Salem most 4>f his life. He was a member of ML Zion Baptist Church and a retired employee of Duplan Corporation and Forsyth Memorial Hospital's maintenance department. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth C. Little of the home; four daughters, Betty L. Withersnjon, Paulette L. (James) Burch, Minnie L. (Tyro) StephensJ^amela L. McNeil, all of Winston-Salem; two sons, Danny lid Bobby Little, both of Winston-Salem; one brother, Willie Little of Winston-Salem; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Stewart of Winston -Salem; Bar bara Ellis and Hazel Morton, both of Wilmington, Del.; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a devoted cousin, Melzetata Dowell;plus many other relatives and friends. 1 Funeral services were held Friday, October 30 at 4 p.m. in the Russell Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Serenus T. Chum officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Directors handled the funeral arrangements. MEDDERS Mrs. Theopha Edwards Medders of Winston-Salem died Saturday, October 31, 1992 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was bom March 6, 1903 to the late Ronald Edwards and the late Ella Guest Edwards in Union. S.C. She was reared in Hickory Grove. S.C.. and attended the public schools there. She moved to Winston-Salem in 1942. Mrs. Medders had been a resident at the Oaks Nursing Facility and was formerly employed w ith North Carolina School of the Arts. She was a dedicated member of First Waughtown Baptist Church, where she served as president of the Nurses Board, a member of the Senior Gospel Choir, the Pastor's Aid. the Hos pitality Committee, and the Missionary Circle. Mrs. Medders was well known and respected in the church community because of her spiritual and financial support. She was also a member of the Belview Flower Club and the Belview Civic League. She is survived by her son, Frederick Medders of Balti more, Md., who timelessly journeyed to see her three or four times a month during her confinement to the nursing home; her grandchildren, Janis ^1. Thompson of Baltimore. Md., and Freddie A. Hawkins "bf Charlotte; a devoted daughter-in-law. Maethelda Medders; great-grandchildren, Gillis Thompson and Ashley Brown, both of Baltimore, Md., Fredrea Galloway of Gastonia and Freddie Hawkins Jr. of Charlotte; plus many other relatives and friends. ? Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 3 at 12 p.m. at First Waughtown Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dennie Bishop officiating. Burial followed at Piedmont Memorial Gar dens. Russell Funeral Directors handled the funeral arrange ments. PORTER Mr. Hugh E. Porter of New York, New York, died Friday, October 23, 1992 in New York. He was bom September 25, 1916 in East Bend to the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Porter and Lizzie Spease. He was the last survivor of triplets. As a boy at the age of six, his family moved to Winston-Salem, and it was here that he began playing the piano without instruction. At this age, his mother recognized that he had the gift to play the piano and arranged for him to study with a private tutor. After a few years of study and at the age of twelve, he became the organist of the West End Baptist Church Young People's Choir. He and his mother moved to Braddock, Penn., in 1929, where he contin ued piano instruction under Professor Bernard and finished his formal education at Scott High School. He continued his stud ies at Sloan Conservatory of Music in Pittsburgh and the New York College of Music. Professor Porter was a member of Second Canaan Baptist Church for 45 years. He was the musician and director of the Gospel Inspirations of the Trinity Baptist Church in Bronx, New York. In the span -of his rich lifetime of achievements, Professor Porter was an actor, a composer, musical director, organist, pianist, scholar of piano and voice, as well as star of stage, radio and television. He toured throughout America and was well-known for his f&rfbrmances in Europe at international jazz and gospel festi vals. But is is for his starring role in the Langston Hughes play, 'Tambourines To Glory" that he gathered worldwide acclaim. Professor Porter is also famous for his role as musical director of the Broadway hit production, "Jericho Jim Crow." Professor Porter was highly respected among musicians around the coun try and maintained good standing membership in the American . Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers; AFTR; the Equity Actors Guild; and the American Guild of Authors. He is survived by a nephew, Howard L. Ward and wife, _ Viola, of Winston-Salem; a godson, Gene Goodeof New York, - NY; plus many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 29 at 4 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Konnie G. Robinson officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Directors handled the funeral arrangements. SIMPSON Ms. Karen Delores Savage Simpson of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, October 28, 1992 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She was bom July 24, 1956 in New York. N.Y.. to Elizabeth Edwards Savage and the late Albert Savage. She was a Baptist and was educated in the New York public schools. She was a graduate of Fashion Industries High School in New York City and attended LaGuardia Community-College. She was a former employee of First National Bank of New York, N.Y. She moved to Winston-Salem in December 1990 to live with her mother, Elizabeth Savage. She is survived by her dear mother, Elizabeth Savage of the home; her brother, Albert (Geraldine) Savage of German ton; devoted nieces, Davana O'Connor of Brentwood. Long Island, N.Y., Kimberly Savage, Michelle Savage, Desiree Williams, Audra Owens, all of New York, and Yvonne Owens of Wrinston-Salem; a devoted nephew. Damian Owens of New York, N.Y.; plus many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday, November 2 at 1 1 a.m. in the Russell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Garther W. N.Y., Carroll Adams of the home, and Sandra A. Mcintosh of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Samuel G. Adams of Rocky Mount and Shedrick Adams of Winston-Salem; plus many other relatives and friends. Seconda was a native of Char lotte, N.C. and a 6th grade student at Wiley Middle School. Delmar was a native of thic'T6ity and a 5th grade student at Griffin Elementary School.
