N.C. "The interest and support of these friends have been invaluable as we visited Rome and then hosted Italian Olympic officials in Win ston-Salem in October and this week," Little said. Little added that Italy was par ticularly attractive because of the size and quality of it's Olympic teams and because of longstanding relationships between Winston Salem institutions and Italy. Among them are North Carolina School of the Arts summer programs in Siena; Wake Forest University's study abroad program at Casa Artom in Venice: and Bowman Gray Sch qq) of Medicine programs in Rome and Milan. Little called Winston-Salem's Olympic host city status an excel lent example of public-private part nership and praised the involvement of members of the Winston-Salem Board of Alderman, Forsyth Coun ty Board of Commissioners, and the Tourism Development Authority, as well as representatives of the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, Sara Lee, and many others. Fred Nordenholz, president of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce, which has spearheaded the effort to convince the Italian Olympians to come to Winston Salem, said that the relationship between the city and it's visitors will have many benefits for Win ston-Salem. "Among the most important is the high visibility Winston-Salem and Forsyth Count) will receive in the national and international news media. Already, the name "Win ston-Salem" has been appearing in headlines of newspapers in Rome and elsewhere in "Italy ." Nordenholz said. Winston-Salem also is sched uled to be featured in the February 1995 issue of Sport Europe maga zine, which reaches* a sports-orient ed audience throughout Europe. Other expected economic ben efits include an increase in tourism, Nordenholz said. In addition to the Italian athletes, it is likely that many Atlanta-bound Italian tourists will cpme to Win^trm-Salpm tn watch their teams train and possibly to see exhibition games with other countries. Nordenholz also said that the strong relationship with Italy could result in other tangible economic benefits for Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. North Carolina already is one of the top states, in terms of the number of Italian based companies doing business in the United States, and the WMnston Salem Chamber of Commerce hopes to build on that base by leveraging the high-profile presence here of the Italian Olympic teams. In his statement, CONI Cameli said, "Italy has an admirable record in the Summer Olympics. Our ath letes^have won almost 400 medals in the last 100 years of Olympic competition. "We intend to continue this tra dition. in Atlanta in 1996. and one key to success is training in the United States ^rior to going to Atlanta. Our athletes must be in top mental and physical condition. This requires superior residential and practice facilities, Olympic specifi cation equipment, access to fitness areas, and knowledgeable sports medicine personnel on site and on. call. And all of this must be in a hospitable environment conducive to complete concentration and attention to a training regimen. "A few weeks ago, two execu tives from the Italian Olympic Committee and six representatives of various sports federations visited Winston-Salem, toured your facili ties, and enjoyed your gracious hos- ? pitality. They saw your university campuses and your outstanding city sports complex. They were impressed and made a very positive report to us upon their return to Rome. Our own quick tour this morning has confirmed what my colleagues reported to us," Cameli said. "Consequently, the Italian Olympic Committee will proceed with plans to make Winston-Salem, . North Carolina, the primary U.S. pre-Olympic training site for Italian athletes competing in the 1996 Summer Olympics," he said. The Centennial Olympic Games will begin July 20, 19% in Atlanta. The Italian teams are expected to train in Winston-Salem for two to three weeks prior to trav eling to Atlanta for the Olympic competition. DID YOU KNOW Bishop College holds the NCAA Div.
