African-Americans are 2.5 times more likely to die of stroke than white Americans 01997 American Heart Association BHBIDSI i Warning against being lukewarm Lesson Scripture: Revela tion 3: 7-22 Lesson Aims: to understand the differences in churches, examine Christ's response to each church and evaluate our lives. Background: Chapter 3 opens with a letter to Sardis. The city was at the top of a hill and had been an important wool cen ter just a few miles from Thy atira The city had been captured twice because soldiers hadn't guarded a segment of the wall properly. The city was losing its prominence and the church as well. Christ's description, "the Laodicia, on the other hand, is somewhat different. Jesus says to them that He is the Amen [God's purpose established in Him), the faithful and true wit ness [absolutely reliable and trustworthy] and the beginning of the creation of God [world come into being through Him] ? Urban Ministries Inc. Laodi cians' worship was half-hearted; their service half-committed and they were full of pride. They were lukewarm. This made Christ sick! According to them, they had it all together and prob ably pitied the other churches. Jesus tells them they don't have it together and to do so, they must seek Him and Him only. SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON By MILDRED PEPPERS seven Spirits of God," depicted his perfection. No time was spent on commending them. Sardis got a stern rebuke. Their reputation was good, but in real ity they were dead [no spiritual life]. These believers were satis fied with things the way they were. Wake up, was Christ's cry, wake up or I'll come as a thief [the previous invasion] because you are not watchful. They must repent or die. There was a "faithful few" that were promised eternal fellowship with Christ. Their garments [white] were an indication that they received the righteousness of Christ [Bible Expositor and Illu minator]. Both churches in today's lesson were bustling cities also. Philadelphia [city of brotherly love] and Laodicia were at opposite ends of the spectrum. One was passionate for Christ; the other was caught ? up in worldly things. Lesson: Described as holy [majestic], true [the only God], ; and the key of David [authority] Jesus commends the Philadel phian Church's work. With little, these faithful believers have been busy spreading God's word. They were told that their opposition [synagogue of Satan] will come and worship at their feet. Because they endured, Christ will keep them from the hour of temptation (most believe ; this to be the great tribulation). ? This period will be world wide, not just some local trouble. Out of necessity, He comes down on them harshly because He loves them. A wonderful pic ture is painted here of Christ knocking at the door (our hearts). Laodicians weren't seeking Him but the invitation is always extended. He is the true remedy for what ails them. Repentance is needed in order to fellowship with Him in the Kingdom. ' Application: 'To be or not to be, that is the question" [Hamlet] is an appropriate beginning. Christ's "to be" is being hot [passionate] for Him, not lukewarm. The state of luke warmness implies it doesn't fit the scheme; too warm to be cold, yet not enough heat to be hot. A terrible state to be in. Christ isn't happy with this. Be for Him not warm. Modern Christians fall into these churches' characteristics. We are on fire for Jesus or we are wrapped up in ourselves and pretend at being Christians. How could our society get like it is unless too many of us have been pretending, window dressing. Reliance on self, money, posi tion and power are the things that don't matter to God! What ever we have [a little or a lot], if we place it in the Master's, hand becomes much. Our focus is to be faithful to Him and spread the Good News. From this series [April 6-27], I leave you with the thought. Is God happy with our lives and our praise? HUH fl^H The goal of every surgery is to Hf improve the quality of life for our patients. For some, it may mean reduction of pain; for others it is improved mobility or correction of a deformity. At Forsyth Hospital, our surgeons and our surgical teams have ^B ' the ability to do this. In highly complex procedures. such as the Gaines Procedure, every ^B? member of our team is involved in the planning. We carefully consider HL each option before we decide on a ^B course of treatment. ^B Then our physicians, operating room staff, nurses and rehabilitation staff coordinate every step of a HB patient's recovery to provide the H greatest opportunities for success. ^B Along with the diverse technical abilities of our team. But If You Do...; Repairing spinal injuries and the effects of degenerative disease are among the most complex procedures performed by the orthopaedic surgeons at Forsyth Hospital. Last year, we were one of the first centers in the country to perform a technically demanding surgical technique - the Gaines Procedure - which was developed to reconstruct severe spinal deformities. ; Fortunately, most of us will never require surgery this , complex. But if we do, it's reassuring to know this level of technical expertise is available at Forsyth Hospital. FORSYTHHOSPITAL "^IT The Science of Healing. The Arl of Caring.m
