WIN from page Bl "We called a sprint out pass because we wanted to get him out on the perimeter," Blount said. "But he got bottled up and he just made an athletic play. "We expect big things out of him." Blount said "I'm glad the young man had a chance to show what he can do " Woodbury said he and Hines. who caught a 30-yard touchdown pass earlier in the same, had already discussed the need to improvise if the play broke down . "I told him if he sees me scrambling, to break deep and I would try to get the ball to him." Woodbury said. "All we wanted to do was to get the first down. But we ended up with a touchdown and that's fine with me." For the second week in a row Woodbury was able to give the Rams a lift In his first start of the season he nearly sparked the Rams to an upset win over North Carolina Central The Rams fell just short, losing 30-29. Another key factor in the game was the Rams' defense, which yielded onl y two touch downs to the Trojans. Virginia State came into the game averag ing 32 points per game against conference opponents. The Trojans were able to muster 352 yards of total offense, 16 more than their average coming into the game. But WSSU can up with key i defens ive stops when it needed them "The defense played a great game." Blount said. "Coach (Andrew) Faison a good job of getting them prepared. They bent, but they didn't break. Virginia State was able to move the ball in the middle of the field, but they couldn't get into the end zone." , t WSSU's defensive effort was led by Calvin Lloyd and Taiwan Everett, who seemed to always be in the right place at the right time The linebacking duo put pressure on VSU quarterback Antonio Hawkins throughout the game. The Rams' secondary also came up with some big plays, knocking down numerous Trojan throws and coming up with two inter ceptions to thwart VSU drives. The unit also forced three Trojan turnovers and recovered all of them. WSSU's defense rose to the occasion to preven t the Trojans from tying the game. The Trojans had inarched 63 yards for a touch down to close the gap to 14-12 with 6:52 remaining in the game. Coach Lou Anderson of VSU decided to go for a two-point conver sion to tie the game. But pressure by Lloyd and Jonathan Vaughters caused an errant throw and the Rams were able to hold onto their lead. The Rams win should help give them confi dence as they go into the stretch run of the season. They improved to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the CIAA. "I think it should give us a lot of confi dence." Blount said. "We want to finish the season as strong as possible " EAGLES from /xigr HI the first half, scoring on every pos session and taking a 32-0 lead, Jason Brayboy gave the Eagles good leadership at quarterback and running backs Mike Hromdka and Lamont Young supplied over 100 yards apiece to boost the attack Coach Doug Shields said his team executed about as well as he could expect in improving their overall record to 5-2. "We had a pretty good offensive team already and when Jason came down from the varsity two games ago that just took us to another level," Shields said. "He really opened up our passing game and he's really put us in position to put a lot of points on the scoreboard. He had probably 225 yards of total offense. Young added two touchdowns to go with his 50-yard rushing effort. "He had an outstanding night rushing the football from the half back position." Shields said. Hromdka did his damage on both sides of the ball. In addition to carrying for over 100 yards and scoring twice, Hromdka led the defensive effort that shut out Southeast in the first half. Brian Daniels also turned in a strong performance for the Eagles at inside linebacker. < Daniels had been the starter at I quarterback before Brayboy came I down from the varsity. Brayboy led I East to a 40-20 victory in their con ference opener against i Northwest Guilford two weeks t ago. < "That really helped Brian." Shields said. "Now he's not worn t cfut playing both ways and is able to 5 concentrate just on defense." ? The Eagles also got a boost c from Jamie Jessup in their lopsided t win. Jessup scooped up a fumble \ on a kickofT return and rambled 30 a yards for a touchdown. Ii Southeast was finally able to get I* on the scoreboard after the Eagles c put in their reserves. Overall, c Shields said his team played about as well as they could. "Going into the season we thought we had a pretty good team." Shields said "But because of a lack of depth on the varsity w*e thought they might have to pull up some of the kids from the jayvee. We've had some kids to come around and play well. A lot of our kids had never played a down of Football before this season, but they tiave come in and done a good job." Shields said he hopes the EagleS will bring the same kind of effort K> lie field against North today (Oct. m. "Our kids are excited about get ing the chance to play North." shields said. "It's going to be a big tame for them. The only thing you an play for In jayvee football is for he the conference championship. Ve're really looking forward to it ind seeing how we stack up. I've leard a lot of good things about slorth and we just want to get a hance to play them. Hopefully we an play with them." NORTH from page B1 Northwest didn't make any. We were trading eight (points) for six." Bowles said. "That was the difference. The game was going back and forth." North was finally able to put some difference between itself and Northwest in the second half The Vikings took the second half kickoff and marched 55 yards in four plays Michael France broke a 54-yard run for the touchdown and Eldridge passed to Masencup for the extra point to make the score 40-24 North's defense held and it got the ball back. The Vikings increased the score on Collins' one-yard run and Eldridge connected with Conrad on the conversion for a 48-24 lead. Northwest scored again for the final margin, but North Forsyth was able to hold them the rest of the game to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the confer ence. "I was pleased with the defense in the second half." Bowles said. "We were able to put together two pretty good goal line stands. Offensively, we scored on all but the final two drives." The Vikings will square off in a key conference bat tle today (Oct. 21) against Fast Forsyth. Forsyth County JV Football . With Butler fueling the offense, the Titans were able to come back from an early 6-0 deficit Butler got j the Titans on the scoreboard when he scampered 45 yards for the first of his touchdowns. He then took a pitch on a sweep and added the two point conversion for an 8-6 lead. After another long drive, the Titans increased their lead to 14-6 on Butler's three-yard run and that was the score at the half. But Mount Tabor mounted a long drive to even the score at I 4-14 in the third quarter. The score remained that way until the fourth quarter when Butler again led a Titan drive. Butler got the score on a five-yard run and quarterback Steve Harrison added the conver sion on a bootleg for the final points. "Our offensive unit did a great . job." Hayes said. "The offensive line - did a good job. as did the tight end and the fullback. We really did a good job of staying on our blocks. I told them before the game that if they blocked we'd have a chance to win and they went out and did it." West's defensive unit also played well. The Titans' inside linebackers played exceptionally well, according to Hayes. The Titans, currently atop the CPC standings, will travel to South Rowan for a conference game today (Oct. 23).
