OBITUARY ^OOPER i~uncral Home J\i KI 104/) GANDY Mrs. Easter Mae Candy, of 362! Harvard Rd in Winston-Salem, died Oct. 13 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She was born Sept. 14 , 1922, in Chester, SC., to Bill and Maybell Bryant. She was a retired employee of John Hoots, She was a devoted member of St. Stephen's Baptist Church, where she served on the Gospel Choir, the Esther Missionary Group and the North Winston Senior Citizens Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Gandy. two daugh ters. Carolyn Jones and Doretha E. Gandy; and one brother, Dennis Lee Bryant. She leaves to mourn, three daughters. Barbara Rucker. Marie (William) Brown, and Topsanca (Todebug) Gandy. all of Winston-Salem; three sons, Robert (Lisa) Jones, Raymond Gandy. and Darryl Gandy, all of Winston Salem; two sisters. Lillie Coleman, of Elniont, N.Y.. and Dorinda Rice, of Spartanburg, S.C.; two brothers, Johnny Bryant, of Orange, N.J., Willie Bryant, of Elmont; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; devoted grandson Reginald Gandy; two devoted adopted children, Roland Ingram and Mary W. Ingram; and a host of devoted cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Oct. 18 at St. Stephen's Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.R Samuels officiating. Burial followed at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Hooper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. DECOSTA Mrs. Vcrsie Lolita DeCosta, of 4910 Lansing Dr. in Winston-Salem, died Oct. 10 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 6, 1937. in Wadesboro. N.C.. to Marshall Sr. and Mary Ingram Dunlap. She attended Mt. Calvary Holy Church, where she was a member of the Missionary, Sunday School and Nurses Boards. She was also Mother of the church and a member of the Pastors Aid. Mrs. DeCosta was preceded in death by a daughter. Loretta Torrence She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband. Richard DeCosta. of the home; four daughters. Vergie Collins, of PfafTtown. Tina Simms. of Winston-Salem. Deborah Comfort, of San Diego. Calif., and Patricia Wilson, of New Haven. Conn ; four sisters. Nester McCallum. Josephine Massey and Pecolia Melton, all of High Point, and Bernice Brown, of Maxton: one brother. Nathaniel Dunlap. of New Haven, Conn ; 19 grand children; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Oct. 16 at Mt. Calvary Holy Church, with the Rev. Dr. John Mendez officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Hooper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Russell Funeral Home 822 Carl Russell Ave. 722-3459 DOWELL Mrs. Bessie Parks Dowell. of Capitol Hill Nursing Home in Washington. D C., died Oct. 11 at Providence Memorial Hospital in Washington. Mrs. Dowell resided in Winston-Salem before moving to Washington in 1945. She was the mother of Barbara Hill Booie. who preceded her in passing in 1989. She is survived by a devoted daughter. Lucy Cabell, of Washington; three grandchildren, Clarence Lewis Hill Jr., of Durham. Talmadge "Ike" (Sandra) Hill, of Chicago, and Louise Hill, of Winston-Salem; eight great-great-grandchildren; and other rela tives and friends. Graveside services where held Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. at the family plot of Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Wendell A. Johnson officiating. LOWE Mr. James Delvert Lowe Sr., of 2821 Clement St. in Winston Salem, died Oct. 12 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. He was born Aug. 31, 1941. in Sedge Garden, to Marion Gray and Lola Martin France Lowe He attended the city schools of Winston Salem. He lived in Greenville. SC., for a few years and returned to Winston-Salem, where he was employed for a time with R J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. He is survived by his wife. Denise Mickle Lowe, of the home; his children. Lolita Lowe, of Atlanta. Lola T. Lowe. James D. Lowe Jr., and Milton Low.e of Greenville, S C.; four stepchildren, Tajuania. Tysonia, Tashia and Roland O'Neal, all of Winston-Salem; three lov ing sisters, Dorothy France-Davis, of Baltimore. Camille Lowe Amaker and Marcia (Eric) Lowe Martin, both of Winston-Salem; a special uncle and aunt who loved him as a son, Sylvester and Ola M. Martin Foote. of Winston-Salem; two nieces; three nephews; one great-nephew, one great-great-niece; a mother-in-law. Jacqueline Yarborough: a father-in-law. Dennis Mickle; and many other loving family members. Funeral services were held Oct. 17 at Bethelehem Baptist Church, with the Rev. E.L. Clark Sr. officiating. PENN , Mrs. Minnie Mae Thompson Penn, of 234 East Dr. in Winston Salem, died Oct. 13 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. ! : ; 9 I She was a native of Shelby, and had lived in Winston-Salem, for over 75 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Penu was formerly employed with Staley's Restaurant and retired from the Elks Club. She was a member of the Lakeside Community Club.
