Dr. Maggie Earl Friday Benson, daughter of the late Earl and Minnie
Speaks Friday, passed away recently at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a
native of the city and was educated in the public school systems of Elizabeth
City, New Jersey and Winston-Salem. She was a graduate of Winston
Salem Teachers College, N.C. A&T and did further study at the University
of North Carolina. Benson taught school in the states of Virginia and
I Greensboro. She was also proprietor of the Mother and Daughter Kinder
garten and was chairman of the board of directors at Benson's Music Stu
dio and F & B Travel Consultants. Benson was employed as a former
reporter with the Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel "Activities of Col
ored People." At Zion Tabernacle FBH Church, she served as Minister of
A Music. She also served as pianist for 60 years with the Victory Prayer Band
Singers, who performed throughout the United States and abroad. Benson
was a former member of the board of directors at Teamers Educational
Institute in Charlotte:
Surviving are her husband, Samuel Setzer Benson; two daughters, Vir
Nessa D. and Minnie E. Benson; a devoted cousin-in-law, Florence Ceasar
Rice; a devoted nephew, Carl Miller, Jr.; a devoted cousin, Eula B. Colter
and family; sisters-in-law, Beatrice Benson of the city and Catherine Wash
ington and Virginia Welsh of Philadelphia, Pa.; foster son, Dr. H.W. Park
er, six foster grandchildren; nieces, nephews; cousins and other relatives.
, The funeral was held Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. from the Zion Tabernacle FBH
Church., Reverend L.V. Davis officiated. Interment followed in the Ever
green Cemetery. Hooper Funeral Home directors were in charge of the
arrangements.

COOPER
Mr. James Robert Cooper, 3010 N. Claremont Avenue, died Oct. 12 at
his residence. <? ?
He was born Jan. 11, 1934, in Winston-Salem. He was a retired painter
of Rakestraw Painting Co. He was a quiet, simplistic, loving, caring family
man and dedicated worker. Mr. Cooper was educated in the Winston
Salem/Forsyth County public schools. He was a member of Canaan Baptist
Church.
He is survived by his wife of the home, Betty Cooper, six daughters,
Sharon (William) Dillard, Rita (James) Scott and Cardeas (Lawrence)
Burns, all of the city, Sarah Ann Cooper, Shirleen Cooper and Yarney
Cooper, all of New Jiersey; two sons, James Cooper of New Jersey and
Melvin Cooper of New York; 29 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a
dedicated uncle, Cleo Robbins; a dedicated cousin, Grace (James) Jenkins;
and a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at Canaan Baptist Church. Dr.
W.E. Brannon officiated. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Hooper
Funeral Home directors were in charge of the arrangements.

James Darnell Knuckles, formerly of 3049 Gilmer Avenue, died Oct. 8 at
, Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
' He was born in Spartanburg, S.C., to the late Jim and Maggie Thomp
son Knuckles. He was a resident of Winston-Salem for most of his life where
he was a life member of the American Legion Post. He was a retired furni
ture refinisher. His spouse, Lena Knuckles, preceded him in death.
He is survived by four sisters, Maggie McKinney, Julia Jones, Essie
(Dennis) Jackson, all of Spartanburg, and Jimmie Ruth Simpson, Tryon,
N.C.; four brothers, Robert (Cora) Knuckles, Harold (Nancy) Knuckles,
Larry Joe Johnson, all of Spartanburg, and Charles (Belle) Knuckles, New
York, N. Y.; a devoted sister-in-law, Louise Knuckles, Winston-Salem; devot
ed care giver and friend, Saludie W. Barney, Winston-Salem; and a host of
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
Graveside services were held Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. at Salisbury National
Cemetery. Chaplain Flem (Otey officiated. Burial followed at Salisbury

Mr. James Henry Brown "BO," 3217 Old Greensboro Road. Winston
Salem, died unexpectedly Oct. 11 at his residence.
He was bom on July 9, 1941, in Winston-Salem, the Son of Fred J.
Brown and the late Clara W. Brown. He was educated in the public schools
of Forsyth County. He was a retired employee of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco
Co., Tobaccoville, and a former bus driver for T B M Luxury Coachline
"BO" was a member of the Macedonia TVPH Church of God Inc. and a
member of the Trustee Board. He was preceded in death by his mother,
Clara W. Brown, and a brother, Fred Brown Jr.
He leaves to mourn his passing his loving children, Teresa Brown, James

Mrs Mattie Frances Deal Conley, 1900 West First Street, Winston
Salem, died Oct. 11 at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Cen
ter.
, She was a native of Franklin. Macon County, N.C., bom on July 31,
189S, to the late James Washington Deal and Celia Jane Shephard Deal. She
had lived in Winston-Salem since 1973. She had been a faithful member ol
the Piney Grove Baptist Church of the Iola Community in Franklin. N.C.,
until she moved. She joined Zion Hill Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, <
now Grace United Community Baptist Church. She was the Mother and
oldest member of the church.
She is survived by one daughter. Sophia Love; one foster son, Archie Lee I
Diehl; eight grandchildren, Charles Deveroux (Arlene), Jerome Leander, 4
Alfred (Gloria) and Marcellious (Emily) Love, Hazel Olivia Ddois Love I
McKoy (Robert), Patricia M.B. Love Coriey (J.P.), Yvonne Patrila Love
Poole (Frank) and Roberta Gloria Love Milk (James); 29 great-grandchil- I
dren; 41 great-great-grandchiklren; two great-great-great grandchildren; one i

Ms Robin Janice Jones Hairston, 2432 White Home Drive, Kemersville,
N.C., died Oct. 11 at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was bom on March 17, 1957, in Forsyth County to Mr. and Mrs
Jesse Jones Sr. She graduated in 1975 from East Forsyth Senior High
School. She was a member of Oak Springs Church of Stokesdale, N.C., and
was a former employee of Precision Fabrics in Jamestown, N.C., until her
health began to decline
She is survived by three sons Tommy L. (Rebecca) Jones Terrell D.
Jones and Antionne L. Hairston, all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren;
her parents Mary and Jesse Jones of Walkertown; a special devoted friend,
Lorenzo Lyerly; three sisters Cynthia Mclntyre, Brenda (Brian) Hairston,
both of Kemersville, and Kenya S. Jones of King; three brothers Dennis
(Shirley) Jones of Walnut Cove N.C., Gordon (Jacqueline) Jones Sr. and the
Rev. Jesse (Veronica) Jones Jr., all of Winston-Salem; one aunt, Mrs Shirley

Mrs Ocie Mae Blackmon Hope, 1265 Reynolds Forest Drive Winston
Salem, died Oct. 13 at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was a native of Lancaster, S.C., and had lived in Winston-Salem for
57 years She was of the Baptist faith and was a devoted homemaker, wife
mother and grandmother. Her husband. Jack Henry Hope Sr., preceded her
in death.
She is survived by two daughters Arleiva (Roscoe) Owens of Lancaster,
S.C., and Janice (George) Powell of the home; two sons Jack H. (Lettie)
Hope Jr. and David Glenn (Hilda) Hope all of Winston-Salem; seven
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers Thorny (Ruth) Black
mon of Lancaster, S.C., and Cherry Lee Blackmon of Detroit, Mich.; five
sisters Mardree Collins and Flossie Hall, both of Lancaster, S.C., Almetta
Johnson of New York, N.Y., Helen Blackmon of Upper Darby, Pa., and
Beatrice Butler of Clamsbury, Pa.; a host of other relatives and friends

JOHNSON
Mr. Bailey James Johnson Jr., Santa Monica, Calif, died Oct. 16 at
Sticht Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
He was born on Feb. 28,1927, to the late Vivian Baxter and Bailey John
son Sr. He was a well-known gourmet chef in Beverly Hills Calif., and
Hawaii. Prior to his illness he was working on a body of poetry and fiction
and his autobiography. ,
He is survival by his sister, Dr. Maya Angelou, and daughter, Ms Rosa
Johnson, both of Winston-Salem; two sons Ross and Nana Johnson of
California; one nephew, Guy Bailey Johnson of California; one great
nephew, Colin Ashanti Johnson of Atlanta; six grandchildren, Kwame,
Olivia, Matema, Monique, Rosa Suzette and Damion Emile Johnson; and
seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Shelby
Fulcher.
A memorial service was held on Oct. 20 at 4 pm. at Mt. Zion Baptist
Church. Dr. Serenus T. Chum officiated. Russell Funeral Home directors

Mr. Frank Sylvester Kinzer, 1166 Morton St., Camden, N.J., and for
merly of Winston-Salem, died Oct. 12 at Woodland Care Hospice Center,
Camden, NJ.
He was a retired employee of the Plaster and Cement International
Local 8 of Philadelphia. His father, Jasper Frank Kinzer, preceded Mr.
Kinzer in death.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Lubertha M. Kinzer of Mount Airy;
his wife, Dorothy W. Kinzer of Camden. N.J.; two daughters. Tiffany Kinz

Mr. Roman Massey, 1831 North Dunleith Ave., Winston-Salem, died
Oct. 9 at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home
He was born on March 28 1947, in Manhattan, N.Y., to the late Claudia
and Frank Massey. He was a native of Bronx, N.Y., where he attended and
graduated from the local high school. He had lived in Winston-Salem since
1977. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and served in the Vietnam War in
1968. He was an employee oif Merita Bakery for 15 years, Lee Jeans for three
years and more recently a the Microtel Hotel.
He is survived by his faithful wife of 14 years, Melba Penn Massey; three
daughters, Juryl Massey of Bronx, N.Y., Vernice Massey of Los Angeles,
Calif., and Sherrill Penn of Winston-Salem; three sons, Roman D. and Alyn
Massey of Bronx. N.Y., and Tyreah Penn Sr.; six grandchildren; one sister,
Karen Lewis of Charlotte; his mother-in-law, Annie M. Penn McRae
(James); six aunts; six uncles; three devoted brothers-in-law, Harold (Callie),

Ms. Mozelle Simmons, 1628 Marble Street, Winston-Salem, died Oct. 13 ,
at Forsyth Medical Center. , {
She was bom on Dec. 7,1937, in Kings tree, SC., the daughter of the late
Emma M.S. Peterson and Damon Jones. She moved to Winston-Salem at
an early age, relocated to New York, N.Y., and spent 15 years there before
returning to Winston-Salem. She attended Atkins High School, was a mem
ber of Heavenly Host Apostolic Church, where Elder Leroy McGee is the
pastor. She was an employee of R J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 22 years.
A brother, Will Simmons, preceded her in death.
She is survived by five daughters, Diane Mungin (Derrick), Jackie
McCall (Oscar), Carolyn Dixon (Glenn), Chariene Simmons (Wandu) and
Tonya Doster (Reggie); one son, Ricky Denard Simmons; 22 grandchildren
and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lina Jane Wilson, Gaynelle Shaver
(O'Neal) and Vanessa McQueen; two brothers, Tommy McQueen of Tiflery,
N.C., and Herbert Albert McQueen of Winston-Salem; one uncle, Rolin
Brown; and a devoted aunt, Ariene Brown; a host of other relatives and dear

Mr. Richard Lindbergh Watts, 2800 North Patterson Ave., Winston
Salem, died Oct. 11 at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home
He was a native of Roanoke Va., bom on Sept. 28, 1928, the son of
Nancy Floyd and Houston Watts. He was a graduate of Atkins High
School, Class of 1947. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church,
where he was president of the Usher Board, a member of the Tuesday
Morning Biblical Study, a member of the BTU and was a Sunday school
teacher. Mr. Watts was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Wyers Watts of the home; eight
daughters, Gail Moore, Peggy (Donald) Clark, Jacqueline (Theodore)
Shannon, Gwendolyn Withers, Jeanette (George) Hatcher, Linda Watts, all
of Winston-Salem, Annette (Nemar) Anderson and Elaine (James) Eller,
both of Richmond; four sons, Richard Lee Davis, Terry (Debra) Myers,
Richard Lee Watts Jr. and Victor (Tangela) Watts, all of Winston-Salem; 25
grandchildren; devoted granddaughters, Kendra Watts of Baltimore, Md.,
