Howard on NBA rookie life One-on-One with Anthony llill It's hard to believe that Josh Howard, Dallas Maverick player and former Wake Forest All-Amer ican, was my first interv iew almost two years ago. 1 usually try to remind him that all of this began with him. We joke about it, but seriously, if that interview would've been a flop, then we would' ve probably had to stop. (I'm smiling as I type this.) 1 looked over our interview the other day. and it had to be one of the rawest interviews that I've done here. There were a few things that I might've edited out if they were said today. Don't get me wrong. Josh gives the best answers. And he never holds back his true feelings. Sometimes he's simply too honest. That's also one of the best qualities that Josh has: his honesty. With J-Ho. you're going to get the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I caught up with Mr. Howard earlier this week to talk about his rookie year in the NBA, future Win ston businesses, women, cars and anything else that came to mind. I always enjoy talking with Josh, because he gives the best answers. And when it comes to athletes, they don't get more entertaining than J-Ho. Anthony: (Smiling.) J-Ho, I can't believe that I got you back in the hot seat. (Both laugh.) I can't believe that you were my first interview here, almost two years ago. I finally got ybii back. How's everything been going? Josh: (Smiles.) In two years, I grew up real fast, man. A lot of stuff went my way, and a lot of stuff didn't. For the most part, I've been having a great time. Anthonv: Can you give me a minor assessment on how you did in your rookie year in the NBA? Josh: I think it was a success, to be honest with you. A lot of people didn't think that I was going to play that much, after being the last pick in the first round. I just proved a lot of people wrong. And that's my thing. I love to prove people wrong. And I did it this year. Anthony: Was the NBA as tough as you thought it was going to be? What was the toughest part about being in the league? Josh: I think the toughest part for me to get over was the players. After watching them play when I was in high school and college, and even more when I was younger, it's something to play with and against them. Once you get over that, everything pretty much just gels out. Of course you're going to get yelled at. because you're a rookie and stuff, but that's a part of the game. Anthony: Coach (Don) Nelson doesn't yell that much, does he? Josh: (Smiles.) Yeah right. Sec One-on-One on B4 Photo by Glenn James. NBA/ Getty Images Former Wake Forest star Josh Howard has made an immediate impact on his team in only one year of action. Salisbury native Jackson plans camp SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE SALISBURY - Salisbury native and Sacramento Kings player Bobby Jackson will bring the action back to Liv ingstone College as lit1 hosts the seventh annual Bobby Jackson/Livingstone College Basketball Camp July 18-23. The five-day camp is designed to help boys and girls aged 7 to 17 not only learn the fundamen tals of the game from the Sacramen to Kings' guard and other basketball experts but also to improve their lead ership skills and foster self- worth. "Livingstone provides a camp that teaches funda mental skills, which is neglected a lot today. Watching the kids try to make it though stations sev eral times daily is always fun to see. They sweat and complain, but they leave knowing that basketball is more ^lan dribbling." Jackson explained. Other activities during the camp include pool parties, all-star games with celebrity basketball players, ice cream days, and movie and game nights. There are options for day campers and boarding campers. All meals are provided on campus and camp participants are covered by secondary medical insur ance. There will also be two all star games Thursday, July 22, in Trent Gymnasium. At 6 p.m. the top 24 female players in Rowan C.ounty will take it to the court. Then, at 8 p.m.v the Rowan vs. Mecklenburg All-Stars game will begin. Admission for the games is $5 in advance, $7 at the door; children 5 and younger can attend free. AM proceeds from the game will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in sup port of breast cancer research.
