Witherspoon ready to dish out pain Carolina Panther linebacker Will Witherspoon was one of the best line backers in the NFL last season. He played both the run and pass better than a num ber of linebackers He led Carolina with 110 tackles and established career highs with four interceptions and tlyce sacks last season. And his four interceptions were the second most among NFL linebackers behind the Five collected by Buffalo's Takeo Spikes. He's looking pretty good on the Pan thers all-time total tackle list as well. The 312 tackles he compiled from 2001-03 rank second on the Panthers list behind Mike Minter's 329 stops. ' I wanted to find out what he's done to get better for the Panthers this summer. I also wanted to see what the team's mind set was heading into this season. I didn't have much lime to finish this One-on-One with Anthony llill interview. 1 kind of 'caught Will in between lunch and his midday nap. You know, pro players must get that sleep in during training camp, but he and I still had a pretty good time. We even talked about my old high sohool beating his school back in the day. According to him, his team used to get the best of my school. That's all right. It was still fun to sim ply bring up the old memories. Anthony: Will, what's good, man? Will: It's all good. I'm just getting ready for this next practice. Anthony: How has practice been going for you all? The heat has been intense, and everyone is a little anxious to play. How has everything been moving? Will: You know, what's kind of funny is that we've had kind of an overcast the last couple of days, so it's been kind of cool. But it looks like it's going to get pretty hot this afternoon. But everyone has worked hard, and we're prepared for it. Anthony: Will, how do you feel head ing into this season? Will: I m feeling good. A year bigger. A year better. Anthony: I hear you, (Smiles.) You've got to be a little excited because you've got another Georgia (Thomas Davis of the Georgia Bulldogs) boy on the team. You've got to be excited about that. 1 - - - - ? ? ? Photo by Jeff Siner/ Charlotte Observer Carolina Panther linebacker Will Witherspoon is entering his fourth season in the National Footbll League. Will: Oh yeah. I've got another DSGB (Down South Georgia Boy) with me. (Both giggle.) We've got it all going, and it's good to have a guy on the team that I actually played ball with and did a lot of things with. He's accomplished a lot in college, and 1 think that he's going to take it a step further with us. Anthony: How much pressure is on this Panther defense, and overall team in general. I mean, last year you all were plagued by injuries. Now, everyone seems healthy.
