Deliver Us from Our Demons Lesson Scripture: Mark 5:1-13, 18-20 Lesson Aims: To recognize Jesus' authority and mercy; to appreciate His transforming power; and to identify the demons in our lives and ask for deliverance. Background: Jesus began His ministry in Galilee. As a matter of fact. He traveled throughout the region on three different occa sions. Last week's lesson came from His first tour. With His popularity growing, small vil lages became His preaching ground. While He healed many, that was not His ministry. The healings simply confirmed His identity as the Son of God. Jesus came to bring Salvation to humanity! By this time. He had chosen all of the disciples, performed many miracles, preached in Capernaum, taught several parables and calmed the Sea of Galilee. Word was spreading quickly. Our lessons this month cen ter on Covenant living. First, we must seek the Saviour for a whole life. But when we think that we've found Him, will we recognize the true Mildred Peppers Sunday School l.esson Son of God? 4 Lesson: After calming the sea. Jesus cross es to the other side with His disciples. There are some questions about His exact location. Needless to say. the event is more important than the location. Immediately, a demon- pos sessed man recognizes Him. Isn't that ironic. the demon know s wno Jesus is: uemon posses sion is an Unclean spirit (s) that invades the per son. The implication here is one who has no control over self who may be a nuisance to the community. To fix this, the community simply expels them from the city. Demon possessed doesn't mean a person is a lunatic. At times, these people may harm themselves and thus they are bound for protection. When Jesus com mands the demons to come out. they obey. They have so completely dominated this man that Jesus talks directly to them. Asking their names, Jesus strikes terror in the demons. They don't want to be banished from this land to hell, so they seek a lesser punishment (put in the swine). Jesus gives His permission, but the swine violently ran down a slope into the sea and are choked. What was the people's response? They ask Him to leave! As He boards a boat to leave, the man formally possessed, asks to go with Him. The man is told to go home to his family, witnessing to them about his blessing. See Peppers on B4
