GILMORE Mother Janie Funderburk Gilmore formerly of the Lutheran Home and 3255 Craver Street expired Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born to the late Wister and Nannie Green in Anderson, S.C. Mother Janie was a member of Saint Paul Apostolic Church and was a retired employee of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. She was preceded in death by her orotner, Herbert Green; sisters, | Robbie Wilson I and Leonie Saunders; sons, Herbert Funderburk Wei born and Howard Funderburk; and her daughter, Juanita Leak. She leaves to cherish her loving memories two sons. Mary Neal was born in Wadesboro, N.C. on October 15, 1922. She later moved to Winston-Salem where she was employed with C&C Cafeteria until her retirement. She was also a devoted member of Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Ministry. Mary Neal was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence Hardy; one son, Claude Hardin; and two sisters, Johnsie Myers and Alease Gray. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Mary Lee Cook and Blondell Spann Hardin of Winston Salem, N.C.; three sons, Henry (Marvetta) Hardin, Mannie (Denise) Hardin and Bernard (Willie Mae) Hardin all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a devoted niece, Evelyn Gray of Philadelphia. MARTIN Elder Richard Hilton Martin, 85 was born to William Gentry and Flora Pearl Hilton Martin on May 5, 1924, in Lawsonville, N.C. He departed from this life on Monday morning, October 12, 2009. after an extended period of illness. Elder Martin retired from Embarq, Inc. (formerly Sprint) in 1984. Elder Martin's true commitment, however, was to his family and to the Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church Association, where he was called to the ministry at the age of 21 . Throughout his adult life, he was devoted to serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and his church members. For more than 55 years, he served as moder ator of the Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church Association, and for more than 50 years, he served as Pastor of Fall Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Axton, VA, Little Richmond Primitive Baptist Church in Elkin, NC, and Martinsview Primitive Baptist Church in Roanoke, V.A. He travelled to many different Primitive Baptist Associations representing the Sandy Ridge Association throughout the southeastern part of the United States. He was truly a family man and a man of faith. Elder Martin was pre ceded in death by his wife of 61 years. She was a member of Phillips i nupei Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Senior Choir, Usher Board, Gospel Choir, and a mem ber of the Culinary Staff. Mary was the matriarch of her family and everyone that she knew; she always gave her love, wisdom, and direction. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. . Murrell. 84. peacefully slept in her Winston Salem home on Sunday, October 4, 2009, the angels of God ushered her into eternal rest. Our beloved Mother and Nana was born in Portsmouth, VA and attended local public schools. She went on to grad uate with honors from Hampton University. Her career brought her to Winston-Salem where she became the first African American Girl Scout Leader in the Southeast United States. She married local businessman and entrepreneur Frank W. Murrell and they established Forsyth Funeral Home which served many iamuies within the com munity. Most dear to her heart were her children and extended family. She instilled in them the impor tance of caring for each other. She was a devoted member ot Saints Home United Methodist Church and served in the capacities of Chairperson and Secretary of the Finance Committee, and was a dili gent member of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Murrell consistently and persistently sought ways to improve the lives of those who were less for tunate. She not only became involved in organizations that would serve these purposes, but she became the founder of such groups that would address quality of life issues: Imperial Deputy of the Desert of North Carolina, Charter Member of the Daughters of Isis, Sethos Court #105 in 1947, Founding Member of the Holidays Bridge Club 1961, Member of the National Council of Negro Women, Glade Street YWCA and Victory Mutual Credit Union Board of Directors, Bethlehem Center and a volunteer for Meals On Wheels. Mrs. Murrell will undoubtedly be remembered for her life lessons on her love for God, family values and commitment to serving others. She was preceded in death by her hus band, Frank W. Murrell and daugh ter. Beverly M. Whitehead. In Memory of Joseph LaVenton Cotton Joseph LaVenton Cotton was born on May 7, 1949 in Hartsville, South Carolina to Rosa T. Cotton Fox and the late Hollis C. Cotton. Mr. Cotton departed this life unexpectedly on Sunday. September 13, 2009 at Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center. He moved to Winston Salem with his family at an early age and attended the local public schools, graduating from Atkins High School, Class of 1967. He attend ed Forsyth Technical Community College receiving certification in welding. He was employed as a secu rity officer at Brookstown Inn, a position that he truly enjoyed. Mr. Cotton dedicated his life to doing for others. He truly loved his family and will be missed by all who knew him and his loving and encouraging ways. Wherever he went, he was always a light shin ing in darkness. He was a member of Saint Peter's Church and World Outreach Center. Joseph thoroughly enjoyed his School of Leaders training and the brotherly fellowship of Generation 12 under the leader ship of Tony Spaulding. Joseph enjoyed being washed by the holy words of God (bible) as he began his journey to the cross. He loved the transformation being "cleaned up and out" as he and his wife prepared for entering into the vision of Bishop J. C. and Lady Joyce Hash. Joseph would have graduated and been pre pared to win souls and make disciples of men. Joseph's final words to his wife before his soul left his old battle-scarred body were "Wifey, I love you." and "'Jesus, I know you love me!!" Joseph loved the power in teaching about GRACE! He is survived by his wife, soul mate, and best friend. Carole Prince Gillis Cotton; his mother. Rosa Cotton Fox; (There was a special bond between him and his stepfather, the late James Foxx who he truly loved. Joseph bonded with and was reared with his other siblings from an early age.) his daughter. Tisheka S. Williford. A celebration of his life was held on Monday. September 21, 2009 at Saint Peter's Church and World Outreach Center. The family received friends from 12:30 p.m. and home going services followed at 1:00 p.m. over 28 family members and friends gave their lives to Jesus Christ. In lieu of flowers, Joseph requests that donations be made in his name to St. Peter's World Outreach Building Fund or the charity of the donor's choice.
