I About 1 .700 pounds of food - enough to fill nearly 14 large boxes - was col lected on Oct. 15 at a movie screening at BB&T Ballpark. The food was donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. The event also raised funds for the Bethesda Center for the Homeless. Family Serv ices and the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission. Nature's Select Premium Turf Services, which main tains the lawn at the Ballpark, in conjunction with The Wharton Gladden Founda tion. hosted a free screening of the animated hit film "Rio." The goal of the night was to bring families together while raising awareness of the plight of homelessness and hunger. Mayor Allen Joines and City Council Members James Taylor and Derwin Mont gomery addressed the 1 ,700 people that attended, urging them to be generous to the charities of the night. "Every night in Winston Salem, there are about 500 in dividuals who are homeless. Oct. 29 from II a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Firehouse Subs restaurant at 205 S. Stratford Rd. Firefighters will arrive in a fire truck and will be con ducting tours throughout the day to show everyone the truck and the equipment they use on the job. These local fircfighting heroes also will take people inside the Department's Fire Safety Trailer, where they will demonstrate what to do if a fire breaks out in the home. One of the members of the Fire Department will appear in costume as Sparky the Dog to entertain the younger children. The Owners/Operators of the Triad Firehouse Subs - Mark and Matt Whitley - are encouraging everyone who attends this special event or visits either the High Point or Winston-Salem restaurant during the last few days of October to undertake their own "heroic act" by donat ing $1 or $5 to the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. The Public Safety Foundation was established by the restaurant chain in 1995. Its goal is to make a positive impact on local communities by providing fire departments with the tools, technology and train ing they need but often daft' t have the budget to fund. Southeast Middle's BOYS program awarded grant SPECIAL TO rHE CHRONICLE Dr. Deborah Daniels of Southeast Middle School recently received a $350 grant from the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce, which believes that one way to create a strong business community is by supporting educational opportunities available to public school students. The grant was given through the Chamber's Teacher Grant Program. Daniels said the funds will be used to purchase video equipment for use by students in the BOYS (Building Our Youth Successfully ) Club and busi ness classes. Boys wilt compile a digital portfolio of their experiences, which includes working with an adult mentor, in the after school club.
