Local AKAs take kids to D.C. SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE On Monday, April 2, members of the Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) Program, sponsored by the Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., took an unforgettable day trip to Washington, D.C. The 12 EYL participants visited the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and sev eral memorials honoring vet erans, including the Vietnam Wall, the Vietnam Women's Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and the World War II Memorial. The young ladies had lunch at the Aerospace Museum, followed by a tour of the Museum of Natural Science. The girls were accom panied on the trip by their family members and friends and members of the AKA EYL Committee. The Emerging Young Leaders initiative is one of the signature programs of the sorority. It is designed to pro vide leadership development, civic engagement and enhanced academic prepara tion for young girls in grades six through eight. Phi Omega, the local chapter, has fully embraced this charge, and has actively worked with middle school girls from the Winston-Salem community to provide civic and cultural opportunities as they prepare for future academic and lead ership opportunities. * Female leaders attend E-Girls luncheon . V SPECIAL TO THE CHRONiri P E-Girls' (Empowering Girls In Real Life Situations) recent annual fundraising luncheon was themed "E-Girls Honors," and a number of successful temale role models were honored. The honorees were: Michelle Cook, vice chan cellor for University Advancement at Winston Salem State University; Florence Corpening, CEO of the YWCA of Winston Salem/Forsyth County; Katura Jackson, executive director of the Work Family Resource Center; Keela Johnson, owner/publisher of Forsyth Woman Magazine, Forsyth Woman Engaged! and co-owner of Forsyth Family Magazine; Dr. Tracey Keck-Staley, instruc tor of mathematics at WSSU; Dr. Manderline Scales, community leader and retired educator; Barbara Stowe, director of New Accounts/Sales for Winston-Salem Federal Credit Union; and Cynthia Williams-Brown, associate professor and chair of the Department of Human Performances & Sport Sciences at WSSU. The luncheon was set up so that E-Girls participants were partnered with individ ual honorees, creating an atmosphere where the girls could hear the honorees* success stories. Nadia Moffett, Miss North Carolina USA 2010 and founder of the Queens Foundation, gave the keynote address. She told the girls that what is in their hearts is more important than what is on the outside. E-Girls is a non-profit organization that mentors girls at Hill Arts Magnet Middle School, Wiley Middle School, Parkland High School and Glenn High School. It was founded by Cheryl Ingram, who serves as E-Girls' executive direc tor.
