BB&T employees spruce-up shelter | SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Experiment in Self Reliance's (ESR) Spring Street Shelter got a facelift last week thanks to the dedi cated volunteers from the BB&T Lighthouse Project, a company-wide community service effort. Employee vol unteers were able to live out BB&T's mission to make the community a better place to live by lending a helping hand at several local agen cies. ESR's Spring Street Shelter was selected from a number of applications that were submitted. The employ ee volunteers planted cypress trees and other plants and painted a deck and banister railings. ESR's Spring Street facil ity houses an average of 18 homeless families annually while they locate permanent housing and work through the process of obtaining it. West students earn Lewisville Civic Club scholarships 1 SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Lewisville Civic Club has presented $ 1,500 scholar ships to three West Forsyth High School students. The winners are Casey Kivett, Emma Gentry and Andrew Hawkins. Kivett earned his Boy Scout Eagle by building a medita tion garden at Lewisville United Methodist Church. Additionally, he has been in the German Student Exchange program as well as German Club, an officer in Students Against Destrictive Decisions and participated in West Forsyth field hockey and LaCrosse: He will attend the North Carolina State University College of Engineering. Gentry earned her Girl Scout Gold Award by starting a recycling program at Baltimore United Methodist Church. She has also created a pet sitting service, volunteers for the Salvation Army and provides upkeep to a neighbor's home and property. She will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Hawkins earned his Boy Scout Eagle by landscaping Morgan Elementary School on Harper Road next to the new Forsyth Medical Center being built in Clemmons. He has been in scouting since Cubs and enjoys mission trips, working at Ronald McDonald House and Bethania Homeless Shelter and playing baseball. He will attend Lenoir Rhyne on a base ball scholarship. The Civic Club's scholarship is based on community serv ice and students must have at least a 2.5 grade point average. Three earn Stratford Rotary Club scholarships SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Stratford Rotary Club recently presented its annual i_: MIlUiaiMlipN IU graduating high school seniors. One nominee per school, selected by the school guid ance counselors, submitted an appli cation along with a letter of reference. Selection was based on academic scholarship; demonstrated lead ership; dedication and commitment to community service; and financial need. Each scholarship award is $2,500. The three win ners are: Rosemary K. Fischer of Ronald Reagan High School; Michael N. Sakano of East Forsyth High School; and Elizabeth E. Urbowicz of West Forsyth High School. Fischer will be attending UNC Asheville in the fall. Her academic interests are English Fischer Sakano Vrbowicz ana psycnoiogy. one nas aw GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Science Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society. She is an AP Scholar and is very active in her youth group at Highland Presbyterian Church. Sakano will be attending UNt Chapel Hill, where he intends to major in biomedical engi neering. He is ranked fifth in his class and has earned a 4.8 GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Crosby Scholars. He a t t e" n d e d Governor's School and the Rotary Leadership Academy. He is an Eagle Scout and Co-Captain of the Varsity Swim Team. He is an active member of the Main St. United Methodist Church. Urbowicz will be attending N.C. State University this fall. She has a 4.5 GPA and plans to pursue a career involving use of the Spanish lan guage. She is a member of the Crosby Scholars and the National Honor Society. she is Captain or the Varsity Swim Team, has been a volun teer for Big Brothers/Big Sisters for the past four years, and teaches Sunday School at Holy Family Catholic Church.
