Family members from states like Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and Virginia attended. The event began with a meet and greet at the Summit Square Club House. The theme was "A-Luau," and each guest was welcomed with a color ful lei. The evening was filled with past memories, food and enjoying one another. Weekend events included a picnic at Reynolds Park with about 100 atten dees, who filled their afternoon with games, swimming and lots of food. A bowling outing was held at Northside Lanes on Patterson Avenue. On Sunday, the family worshiped at the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, where Rev. Dr. Dennis Leach is the pastor. The morning message, "Strange Fire," was preached by Rev. Shirley Timmons. Lunch was served in the fellowship hall after service. Presentations were given to reunion committee members by coordinator Carrie Robinson. Committee members included Assistant Coordinator Evangelist Bessie Massey, Advisor Rev. Henry Massey, Secretary Courtney Massey-Allah, Cederic and Sandra Branch, Freida Johnson, Marie Smith, Alice Thomas, Vivian Jones, Willie Massie Jr. and Felicia Cassaberry. Gifts were given to Sharron and Reginald Smart for traveling the great est distance. (The couple came from Virginia.) The oldest attendee, Robert Moore, 86, and the youngest, three year-old Giovanni Murray, also received gifts. The next reunion will be held in Salisbury. m Photos by Todd Lock Young golfers and others gather under a shelter to celebrate the Clinic's finale. Golf from page El "It's a very, very, very good sport to learn," he said. "You got so many qualities that you're dealing with, character qualities. To play golf and play it right, you got to be dependable, you got to be honest, you got to really work at it." Only a few of the kids had time to practice their drives before, the closing ceremony began under one of the golf course's shelters. Those who did hit balls were encouraged by the other kids with chants like "Tiger Woods" or, in the case of 12 year-old Chantel Thorns, "Ms. Tiger Woods." Chantel has been attending the camp for four years and now says the sport is tied with basket ball as her favorite. "It's actually a quiet sport where you can concen trate on what you're doing," said Chantel, who along with Amaria Hines, received the clinic's Samuel Puryear Sr. Award for obedience, participation and depend ability. Puryear, a former WSSU sports star and father of for mer Stanford and current Queens College Golf Coach Sam Puryear Jr., is one of many local golf enthusiasts who have helped Johnson coach the clinic over the years. Malcom Gant, 13, a a - r AL. _ seven-year veieran 01 me clinic, said he too has devel oped a love of the game, so much so that he is a member of First Tee of the Triad, a popular year-round youth golf program. He likes watching the younger kids in the clinic experience the same thrill he did when he discovered the joys of the sport. "Golf is a game that's enjoyable, relaxing; it's basically a less stressful game," said Malcom, who attended the clinic with his sister, Camryn. WSSU Golf Coach Robert Bethea was one of the clinic's seven coaches. Each trained a group of 10 12 kids. Bethea has also been a clinic coach for many years, 12 to be exact. "I enjoy just working with the kids." said Bethea. "1 love golf so I try to pass it on." Despite the love Hayes has for golf, he made the tough decision earlier this year to end WSSU's golf program as part of a realign ment of the school's Athletics Department. The school's men's indoor and outdoor track teams were also cut. Hayes said it was diffi cult for the school to fund 16 sports teams on its current budget. Hayes said he hopes the school can resurrect its golf program one day when its economic fortunes change. Hands shoot up as Victor Johnson asks who is doing well in school.
