Wisdom and Justice in Leadership Mildred Peppers Sunday School Lesson ? Devotional Reading: I Kings 3: 1-15 Lesson Scripture: 1 Kings 3: 16-28; II Chronicles 9:8 Lesson Aims: To value leaders who demonstrate wisdom, compassion and justice; recognize that doing the right thing is beneficial for all; and learn to practice wisdom and justice daily. Background: When studying the Bible, it helps to remember that it isn't compiled chronologically. Therefore, some explanation from II Samuel through II Chronicles is needed. The account of David's reign was recorded in II Samuel and I Chronicles. Samuel, the book, continued the transition from loose tribes to the monarchy. I and II Chronicles provided "a divine com mentary" (Richards' Complete Bible Handbook) on David's reign. 1 Kings began with David's latter years * followed by Solomon's reign, the schism, and stories of Elijah and Elisha. Again, Chronicles offered the com mentary of the period. Chapter one of II Kings opened with a bit of intrigue. Adonijah (ad oh NIGH juh), David's son bom after Absolom attempted to set him self up as king. The prophet Nathan instructed Bathsheba what to do on Solomon's behalf. David announced that Solomon was king. Intrigue continued in chapter two for the young king (about 20 years old). Solomon had to establish himself as the undisputed king of Israel. The process begins.
